A real newbie needs help (11 posts)

This is an archived topic. The information in it is likely to be out-of-date and no longer applicable to current versions of Fetch.

    I've been trying to upload my web page onto sff.net for months, and can't get Fetch to work. I click on "put," the dog runs, but when I check the site, it's still the old version. I'm really not a techie, and I'm used to instructions that just tell me which icons to click on to get things done. I've tried to learn HTML, but it's all technobabble to me. Can anyone help?

    Have you tried pressing the "Reload" button in your browser, to make sure it isn't showing you a stale cached copy of your site?

    If that doesn't help the most likely explanation is that you're uploading your files in the wrong directory -- i.e. you're seeing the old files because they are still there, and the new files are in some other directory.

    I've done "reload," I've gotten my passwords from the people at sff.net, I've done all those things. But when I'm asked what the name of my file is, I don't know what to call it. My web site URL doesn't work, neither does that plus "index.html."
    Instructions on the sff.net site tell me to go to my home directory and delete a "delete.me" file, but it doesn't tell me where to find that file or how to delete it.
    I'm trying to take responsibility for myself, but I really have run out of resources. I only have a couple computer-savvy friends, but they live in PC world and don't know how Macs work.
    I know that eventually this comes down to, "You click on this, then that, and the right thing happens." That's the point I'm trying to get to, but it's as if I'm putting together something with some pretty basic instructions missing.

    It's hard to provide "click this, then click that" instructions without looking over your shoulder, because every web hosting provider does things a bit differently. Some information that would help:

    * What is the URL of your site? This URL should start with "http://" -- it's what you enter in your web browser to view your site.

    * Try connecting to the server with Fetch, then choose "View File List" from the Remote menu, then choose "Fetch Transcript" from the Window menu, and include the contents of the Fetch Transcript window in your reply.

    I see updated web page files with these names:

    Dave's Home Page index.htm
    Dave's Home Page.bin
    Dave's Home Page.index.htm

    There are two problems with all three of these. First, they have the wrong name. When someone comes to your site the server sends them the file named "index.htm". So when you want to upload an updated main page, it has to be named index.htm. You have an index.htm file, but it hasn't been updated since January.

    The second problem is that the three files named above aren't HTML files; they appear to be AppleWorks or ClarisWorks documents. To change an AppleWorks document into HTML format choose Save As... from the File menu, and choose HTML as the format. If the document is your main page, save it under the name "index.htm" and then upload it with Fetch.

    OK, I tried that. I renamed the file that was "Dave'sHomePage.index.htm" and made it "index.htm." When the various files came up in the Fetch window I selected that one file only, and tried to upload it, but nothing happened.

    You can see your new page at:

    http://www.sff.net/people/dave-creek/index.htm

    The reason you don't see it at http://www.sff.net/people/dave-creek/ is that you also have an old index.html file, and apparently the server prefers index.html to index.htm. You can fix that by deleting the index.html file (select it in the Fetch file list and choose "Delete file or directory..." from the Remote menu).

    We're getting closer...now I'm getting "access denied," but I suspect that's something I have to figure out with the sff.net people. I'll keep working.
