    Hi Jim,

Frequently, when I use Fetch and log into my Web servers I get an error that I have come to figure out how to work around. But it would be nice to fix the problem. I get an error message: Server Response, can't open data connection. I click Ok and the Fetch window is blank, but I noticed that in the Fetch window it reports Status: Connected. I can get and put files using the window and typing in the file names. I can change directories using the menu. I can drag files into the empty window. I tried downloading 4.0.2-- same thing.

Mac OS 9.2.1/Fetch 4.0.2/using Aircard and 802.11b access point (Belikin) to ethernet (cable modem) to Internet

    Thanks, Susan

I would suggest toggling the "Use passive mode transfers (PASV)" checkbox in the Firewall section of Preferences. Does that help? If not, could you post a transcript from the Fetch Transcript window?

    Thanks,

That did it! Thank you. --S

I'm brand new, and have a problem that may be similar:

When I open Fetch, I get a New Connection dialogue box, and a menu bar across the top that says "File Edit Remote Directories Customize Window," but no Fetch page with the interface I see in the tour.

(Unrelated problem: I also get a warning that my password will be sent over the network insecurely, so I hesitate to connect... and there's no option in the Connection window to send it securely. I clicked keychain, but this doesn't seem to make a difference.)

When I do connect, I get a pop-up window with a list of files/directories on my site; I can get and put files, but nothing else -- there's still no Fetch window.

I made sure that "Use passive mode transfers (PASV)" is checked in the Firewall Preferences as you suggested, but this doesn't make a difference.

I'm using OS 10.2.8, eMac 3.3, Fetch 4.02, DSL connection.

Thanks for any light you can shed.

The Tour contains windows from Fetch Version 5.X. Exactly which one are you unable to see? Perhaps it is a window of a feature added since Version 4.

    Hi Pamela,

When I open Fetch, I get a New Connection dialogue box, and a menu bar across the top that says "File Edit Remote Directories Customize Window," but no Fetch page with the interface I see in the tour.

As "sampler" notes, the Fetch tour on our website shows the windows of Fetch 5. We redesigned all of the Fetch windows in Fetch 5, so since you're using Fetch 4, what you see will be quite a bit different. I'm sorry, but we don't have a tour that shows Fetch 4.

While you cannot use the latest version of Fetch on Mac OS X 10.2.8, you can use Fetch 5.0.5, which has the redesigned interface and many other improvements, and will look a lot more like what you see on our tour pages. You can download Fetch 5.0.5 from our downloads page at: http://fetchsoftworks.com/downloads.html .

If you are just trying out Fetch, I suggest you start with 5.0.5. If you've just bought Fetch 4 within the past year, the upgrade would be free; however, if you bought Fetch 4 some years ago; it would be a $15 upgrade for you. However, you can try Fetch 5 free for 15 days to see if you think it was worth upgrading.

(Unrelated problem: I also get a warning that my password will be sent over the network insecurely, so I hesitate to connect... and there's no option in the Connection window to send it securely. I clicked keychain, but this doesn't seem to make a difference.)

Plain FTP is not a secure protocol, and never has been; so if you've been using FTP before, you've been sending your password insecurely already, and just weren't aware of it. Unfortunately, most FTP servers do not support any sort of secure connections, so you often have no choice but to send your password "in the clear."

You can disable the warning by going to the Fetch Preferences, clicking the Security tab, and unchecking "Warn before sending password insecurely." That preference is only useful if you normally make secure connections and want to be warned if something has gone wrong; if you are making regular FTP connections, it is mostly just a nuisance (although it's good to be aware that your password is not being sent particularly securely).

The only sort of secure connections Fetch 4 supports are Kerberos connections, which is it unlikely your server supports.

Fetch 5.0.5 supports making secure connections using the more common SFTP; you would need to check with your server to see if they support SFTP connections. (Fetch 5.2 and later support another type of secure connection, FTPS, but you must be using Mac OS X 10.4 to use that.)

When I do connect, I get a pop-up window with a list of files/directories on my site; I can get and put files, but nothing else -- there's still no Fetch window.

The window where you see the files listed, and can get and put files, is the main Fetch window, so it sounds like Fetch 4 is operating as we would expect it to.

But if you can tell us which window or which feature you were expecting and would like to use, we can tell you were to find it in Fetch 4 (if Fetch 4 has it). Or, as I said, give Fetch 5.0.5.

I hope this answers your questions.

    Thanks,

Thanks! I did get 5.0.5, and now I see what I was expecting... yay.

I'm a rank FTP newbie who's never used an FTP protocol before -- I relied on "YouSendIt" to share large files, but now I need to upload large files to my new website.

Being brand new, I have a concern that my first attempt to put a file in the "upload" folder in my directory may have somehow accidentally messed it up. Specifically, two of the folders in my upload folder are no longer there, and neither is the mp3 file I uploaded. At least I can't view them anymore, and the upload folder no longer shows the more recent date of those folders.

And on my WordPress site, an audio file does appear in the upload folder -- but it's not mine: it's a mysterious "audio test file." ???

How can I find out where those folders have gone? Is there a search function?

And why doesn't the uploaded file appear on my site?

    In newbie confusion,
    Pamela

    Hi Pamela,

Glad to hear Fetch 5.0.5 looks more like what you expected.

The first thing I would try is uploading another test file and see whether it disappears again.

I would also double-check to make sure that you are looking in the same place you uploaded the files. Usually when you connect to your server, you are taken to your "home" folder. A common "newbie" mistake is to change folders, upload something, quit, come back later, and reconnect, which returns you to your home folder again; that may make it look like your files have disappeared, when really they're just someplace else.

If you haven't already, you may want to read through the introductory Fetch tutorial, which you can find by choosing Fetch Help from the Help menu in Fetch, clicking on the Using Fetch link, and then clicking on the Introductory Fetch Tutorial link.

Let us know how it goes.

    Thanks,
