    Hi
I have three websites hosted by the same ISP, two I can access without problem and upload files etc the other although I have always been able to access in the past has now started to return the error message "Can't open data connection". I've contacted the ISP several time and they say the problem is at my end. I've tried with and without PASV checked and I have tried with the Firewall turned off.
I'm including the transcripts both from the site where the error occurs and one of the sites that I can access. The first being the site that returns the error:

    Fetch 4.0.3 System 0x1039 Serial FETCHFL001-B0B2-JFA1 TR

The second transcript is the site I can access:

    Hi Malcolm,

Even though the websites are hosted by the same ISP, they are running different software - one is a Windows server and one is a Unix server. That probably accounts for the difference.

Could you download Fetch 5.0.5 (you can try it free for 15 days) and see if it works with the problem server? (I would try turning passive off for the trial with Fetch 5.) If not, could you post the transcript from your attempt with Fetch 5.

    Thanks,

Thanks Scott, I've just downloaded fetch 5 and it works with passive unchecked and the OS10 firewall turned off. With the firewall on Fetch 5 times out. Looks like I'll have to shell out some more money for the upgrade.
    Thanks again

    Hi Malcolm,

Great, glad to hear that worked.

Active FTP mode (the opposite of passive) won't work with the Mac OS X firewall on. That's why we default to passive, but there are some servers that have trouble with it.

If you haven't already, you may want to try with Fetch 5 with passive on and the OS X firewall on and see if you can still connect successfully. (If you want to run the OS X firewall, that is.)

Please let us know if you have any other questions,
