Connection/Upload time slowed dramatically, now unable to open a new connection (4 posts)

I am using Fetch 5.7.3 on a MacBook Air.

I have been successfully using Fetch for several years to access a website I manage. Over the last few weeks I have noticed a transient, dramatic slowdown in the time it takes to make a connection and to upload new pages and changes to existing ones. Beginning a few days ago I ceased being able to connect to the website at all.

The error messages that I receive each time I try to establish a connection vascillate between the following two:

“An FTP connection to “www.contradance.org” could not be opened because the connection was refused. Contact the server administrator for more information.”

“An FTP connection to ‘www.contradance.org’ could not be opened because the FTP server dropped the connection. Try again or contact the server administrator to verify that the server is running.”

The website server is running, as evidenced by the page being continually available online.

The website host (stokia.com) says that the problem is with my FTP. I'm not sure whether to believe them because I have not touched the Fetch settings and, up until a few weeks ago, I had never had a problem.

Your hostname, www.contradance.org, is refusing connections from here as well. It isn't a problem with Fetch -- I get the same error when I use a different FTP client. So I would go back to stokia and let them know that FTP logins aren't working from multiple locations using multiple clients.

    Thanks,

Since writing you there have been new developments -- I think that Stokia.com is going belly up. See clues at http://www.stokia.com/default.aspx. Plus it is no longer possible to submit an online trouble ticket (clicking the submit button now just generates a gibberish error message).

So I guess that I'll be shopping for a new web host. And when I get that sorted out you can be assured that I will be continuing to use Fetch to load the files. :-)

That's terrible! I hope they are around long enough for you to recover any files you need, and transfer your site elsewhere. Let me know if there's anything we can do.

    Thanks,
