This has just started happening about a month ago. It's only with one server. Fetch works fine for about the first 5 files I try to upload but then stops working. when I try transferring a file I get the message: "Server response: Data connection closed. receive file filename.html aborted."
I'm putting the transcript below. Usually after this happens I can't upload a file for about an hour. The PASV button is not on as per the webmaster's initial instructions.

Are the results the same with the PASV box checked?

    Thanks,

When I checked the PASV box it only got to the first
    257 "/brandonsoccer.com/www/storm" is current directory.
line and then it wouldn't finish.
I unchecked the box and it worked fine...no problems ( i uploaded around 10 different files). I saved the Transcript in case you wanted that as well.

Perhaps the server is behind a firewall, which prevents use of PASV.

So the remaining mystery is why transfers fail occasionally. The next step for trouble-shooting that problem would be to collect a packet trace, which involves some familiarity with the OS X command line. Alternatively, you could try a different program to see if it worked better than Fetch in this circumstance.

    Thanks,

    what am i doing wrong?

    Posted 20 years ago #

  • Jim Matthews Administrator

I doubt that you are doing anything wrong; it's probably a problem with the server, Fetch, or the network in between. Do you want to try collecting a packet trace, or trying a different FTP client?

    Thanks,

how do i collect a packet trace...what other ftp programs are there?

    Posted 20 years ago #

  • Jim Matthews Administrator

There are instructions for collecting a packet trace at http://developer.apple.com/qa/qa2001/qa1176.html . Basically, you want to run Terminal and type this command:

    sudo tcpdump -i en0 -s 0 -w DumpFile.dmp

You will then be prompted for the computer's administrator password. When you want it to stop collecting traffic you would type Control-C; the packet trace would be stored in the file named DumpFile.dmp. Note that your FTP password will be captured.

As for a different FTP client, you might try Transmit from Panic Software ( http://www.panic.com ) or Interarchy ( http://www.interarchy.com ).

    Thanks,
