download stops after first file in folder (18 posts)

    I am using an Automator script to download a folder with 9 files in it from my server to my computer. About a month ago it apparently stopped working correctly. Now it only downloads the first file in the folder instead of all the files in the folder. When i tried running Fetch by itself and selected the folder to download, the same thing happened. When I opened the folder first and shift-selected all the files, then they all downloaded. What could be the problem?

    Hi,

    We'd like some more information to help diagnose the problem. Could you please do the following?

    * Quit Fetch.
    * Open Fetch again.
    * Connect to your server.
    * Select the folder and try to download it (that is, do the thing that causes the problem).
    * Go to the Window menu, and choose Fetch Transcript.
    * Copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

    We'll take a look and see if we can figure out what's going on.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Hi,

    Thanks for the transcript.

    Please try the following and let us know if it helps:

    * Open Fetch.
    * Go to the Fetch menu, and choose Preferences.
    * Click the General tab.
    * Check the "Use passive mode transfers" checkbox.
    * Make a new connection to the server, and try downloading the folder again.

    Thanks,

    HI Scott,

    I tried this and get the same result. After the first file (Contacts) is downloaded, it stalls. Is there another setting I should try? This worked fine until a couple of months ago and then mysteriously stopped.

    Hi Jim,

    Do you ever get an error message, or does Fetch just stall?

    And you said that the download stops after the first file - but the transcript you sent doesn't actually show any file downloading successfully.

    Is what's happening that the download of the first file stalls and never quite finishes?

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    HI Scott,

    What seems to happen is that the file is almost completely downloaded (it is a 72.5mb file and it shows that it has downloaded 72.5mb.) It flies along until it gets to the very end of the transfer. Then it stalls. In my download folder I get a file called Contacts.fp7, but Mac OSX identifies it as a Fetch partial download file instead of a Filemaker Pro file. It shows it as 72.5mb.

    Hi Jim,

    Thanks for your patience while we try to figure this out.

    Is there another folder on your server - or on another server that you have access to - that you could try downloading, to see if you have the same problem with another folder?

    I'd like to find out if this is just a problem with this particular folder, or a more general problem.

    Thanks,

    Hi Scott,
    Thank you for trying to solve this problem. I tried Fetching a different folder on this server and got the same result. I have my server do a nightly backup of my files into folders name for the day of the week. So this time I tried the Friday backup and got the same result. Thoughts?

    I tried downloading another file on this server, with the same result. I tried to fetch the Friday folder and it stalled at the same spot.

    Hi Jim,

    Thanks for that transcript.

    Could you please try connecting to our server and try downloading a folder, to see if you have the same problem? (Unfortunately, the files aren't nearly as large as your files, but perhaps they will be large enough.)

    To do this:

    * Connect to ftp.fetchsoftworks.com (leave the username and password blank).
    * Open the "example" folder.
    * Select the "teststuff" folder and download it.

    Let us know if it gets stuck after the first file or not.

    I was able to successfully download the teststuff folder without a stall. Very puzzling.

    Hi Jim,

    Thanks for trying that and reporting back. This suggests it may be an interaction between Fetch and your specific server.

    We'd like to investigate further to figure out what's going on; would it be possible to get a test account on the server so that we can do tests and diagnostics on our end?

    If that is not possible, would you be willing to do a packet trace for us, which would provide more detailed information about exactly what is getting sent over the network when?

    Thanks,

    I could do a packet trace. I can't open another account on the server because we are using a hosting service for our server. Just let me know how. I still have the same problem that if I try to Get the folder, it stalls after the first one, but if I Get the files one by one, it is ok. I can get multiple files at once as long as it does not include the first file (Contacts).
