Emailing a direct link to a file - (8 posts)

  Hey, everyone.

  I want to be able to email a link to a specific file on my server. So, if I use Fetch to upload a file named APPLE to MYSITE.com, I would like to be able to email someone the link MYSITE/APPLE and they would be able to download the file.

  Help would be awesome. Thanks!

  Hi,

  The WebView feature, available in Fetch 5.2 and later, can help you do this.

  WebView lets you set up a correspondence between files you see listed in Fetch and their address on a website, so that you can copy the web addresses of those files while in Fetch. It requires a little configuration - you must tell Fetch the web address of your server, because in most cases, Fetch cannot figure out your web server's address automatically (because it's different for each server).

  Hi,

  I'm attempting to set up my fetch software to generate direct web links to files on my FTP site. My site is hosted by web.com. I enabled web view in fetch, and when I copy the file link from fetch and click on it, it brings me to a generic "file not found" page at web.com. I followed the directions from the forum at the link below on the fetch site…

  http://fetchsoftworks.com/fetch/messageboard/direct-download-links.

  Any help to get this functionality would be appreciated.

  Hi,

  It sounds like WebView is not configured correctly. Could you:

  1) Choose Preferences from the Fetch menu
  2) Click on the WebView tab

  You should see an entry for your server, linking a Fetch address (starting with ftp://) to a web address (starting with http://). What are those two addresses?

  The addresses read as follows…

  ftp://ftpclient:@jamieandersonvo.com/
  http://www.jamieandersonvo.com

  The file link fetch gives me is this..
  http://www.jamieandersonvo.com/FOR%20ACME/JAMIEVO_MULANY5.1.aif

  It leads me to a file not found page at web.com, my host.

  Hi,

  Thanks, that's helpful. Could you connect to the server with Fetch, choose "View Verbose File List" from the Remote menu, and post the results? That will let me know what files and folders are at the top level of your account, which may help me suggest a correct WebView configuration.

  Hi,

  I apologize for my delay in responding. Your http://www.jamieandersonvo.com site is a bit unusual; connecting there redirects to a page on a different site, http://www.jmtalent.com/anderson.html. My guess is that this redirection (which may be in the .htaccess file that appears in the file list) is why you can't get at the JAMIEVO_MULANY5.1.aif file in the FOR ACME folder. I would recommend consulting with whoever set up the site, or your hosting company, for more help.
