Hi Rikke,

Thanks for the information.

First, I would update to Fetch 5.5.3 and see if that helps.

Second, could you please do the following, which will give us more information about what's going on?

* Quit Fetch, if it's running.
* Open Fetch again.
* Connect to your server.
* Try uploading again.
* After you receive the error, go to the Window menu, and choose Fetch Transcript.
* Copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

Thanks,

Hi Scott,

There are two methods of establishing FTP connections, active FTP and passive FTP. Fetch tries both when trying to connect to a server. The problem is that it appears your server does not accept passive FTP connections, and the equipment (router or wireless base station) you are using to connect to the Internet is blocking active connections (this is not uncommon). So there is no way for Fetch (or any FTP client) to successfully connect via FTP to the server in this situation.

The first thing to do in this situation is to restart the network equipment, because the blocking of active FTP connections may be a temporary glitch that will be fixed by restarting.

But if that is not possible or it does not work, the options in this situation are:

* Adjust the settings of the problem piece of equipment so that it no longer blocks active mode FTP connections (it's hard to be specific about what to change on it; one common cause of this is there is a firewall running, and you or your neighbor do not want to turn it off).
* Connect your Mac directly to the cable/DSL modem, avoiding the problematical router or wireless base station.
* Talk to the people who run the server and ask them to accept passive mode FTP connections.
* See if the server support SFTP connections, and if it does, try connecting to the server using SFTP instead (usually SFTP works in these situations, because it avoids the active vs. passive FTP problem altogether).

The last option - try SFTP - is the best and simplest option, because you can do it yourself, but not all servers support SFTP.

Please let us know if you have any further questions above.

Thanks,

Hi

The router is Draytek Vigor 2910 - this guy: http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2910.html
Fetch version is 5.5.
When I try uploading files it says:
"Fetch could nok put "file name" because an error has occurred. POSIX error 13."
And thats it.
I probably have to change some settings somewhere but I havent got a clue where to look :-)

Hi Scott,

I checked system preferences, and now the error window says "Fetch could not get the file list because there was a timeout trying to establish a passive mode data connection. A server firewall might be blocking passive mode (PASV transfers. Ask the server administrator for help, or try unchecking the "Use passive mode transfers (PASV)" box in the General pane of the preferences." I have entered the transcript below:

Hi Scott,

Okay, thanks. Since the Mac that can connect successfully is on a different network than the problem Mac, this suggests that the problem may be caused by the networking equipment at the other location.

On the problem Mac, I would first try the following:

* Quit Fetch if it's running.
* Open Fetch.
* Go to the Fetch menu, and choose Preferences.
* Make sure the "Use passive mode transfers" checkbox is checked.
* Close the Preferences window.
* Try connecting again.

If that doesn't help, then the next thing I'd recommend is that you try restarting all your network equipment - it seems like a simply troubleshooting step, but it does sometimes help fix problems like you're experiencing. You should do it in the following order:

* Shut down your Mac.
* Unplug your router or wireless base station (if you have one; a router is a device for sharing your Internet connection with multiple computers).
* Unplug your cable/DSL modem.
* Plug the cable/DSL modem back in, and wait about a minute for it to get completely started up.
* Then plug the router or wireless base station back in, and wait another minute for it to start up.
* Finally, start your Mac.
* And try connecting with Fetch again.

Let us know if you're still having problems after trying these two things.

Thanks,

We'd like some more information in order to give you the best advice. There are a variety of things that can cause this problem, although if it started after you installed the new router, the new router is the most likely suspect.

After setting up a new router, I cant put larger files to my FTP using Fetch. The small ones (<10KB) puts fine, but much larger than that wont work. I'm aware there might be a problem at the hosting provider, firewall or something else, but I would like to see if anybody else know this problem...?

Hi Joe,

You can prevent Fetch from writing to the Fetch.log file by locking the existing file; then Fetch will be unable to write to it and it won't create a new one.

However, should you run into problems in the future, our ability to help troubleshoot them may be limited by the lack of a current log file, so we do not recommend disabling the log file.

Hi Randal,

It might be easiest if you emailed your workflow to us so we could take a look at it. (We won't be able to use it to connect to your server, but we can see what order things are in and what the settings are.)

So could you please do the following?

* Select the workflow in the Finder.
* Go to the File menu, and choose Compress.
* Email the resulting zip file to us at bugs@fetchsoftworks.com .

Hi Joe and Linda,

Thanks for the additional thoughts.

To be clear, our replies here should not be taken as an indication that we are planning a version of Fetch for the iPad; we are just interested in hearing about what you think you'd like if there was such a thing.

And yes, if the iPad is like the iPhone, you may not be able to work with files in the same way you work with them on a Mac today, which might limit what things you could do with an FTP client. But of course, it remains to be seen exactly what is or isn't possible with an iPad.

Thanks,

Is there anyway to prevent Fetch from writing this log file? I would like to turn it off. I am not having problems and would prefer to not constantly write this information to disk (SSD for starters). thanks.

Hi,

Answering question 1, are you connecting to your servers using FTP? If so, then yes, you are not connecting securely.

FTP was not designed as a secure way of communicating, and so it sends your password and data to the server unencrypted. This is normal for FTP. There are newer, more secure ways of communicating with file servers, called SFTP and FTP with TLS/SSL (aka FTPS), but not all servers support them. You should contact the company who runs your server to see if they support connecting to the server with SFTP or FTP with SSL, and if so, choose the appropriate option from the "Connect using" menu in the Fetch connection dialog (assuming you are using Fetch 5 or later). In the meantime, you can turn off the "in the clear" warning by unchecking the "Warn before sending password insecurely" checkbox in the Security Preferences pane of Fetch.

In regards to question 2, my best guess is that it sounds like the link you are creating is not correctly referencing the file - so you get a page not found error, because the file isn't in the place the link is telling the server to find it. This error would not result from a Fetch setting. When you are creating the links, are you being sure to use ".sitx" instead of ".sit" in filenames in the links, since the files are now named with ".sitx" at the end?

Thanks,

Hi Scott,

We'd like some more information to help figure out what's going on.

Did this problem start happing after you upgraded to Fetch 5.5.3, or was Fetch 5.5.3 working fine until yesterday?

Or was it happening with an older version of Fetch, and you upgraded in hopes that would fix the problem?

And could you please do the following?

* Quit Fetch.
* Open Fetch again.
* Try connecting to your server.
* After you receive the error, go to the Window menu, and choose Fetch Transcript.
* Copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

Hi,

Even if you just edited one blog page in iWeb, uploading just that page probably wouldn't be a good idea, because other pages may have changed as a result of editing that one page. (For instance, if it's a new blog page, other pages in iWeb will have been updated to link to that page.) Also, iWeb tends to make changes to other pages unexpectedly, even if you only made an edit to one page.

The best thing to do is to look into using Fetch's Mirror command, which only uploads new and changed files - it will do its best to minimize the number of files uploaded. You can find out more about it in the mirroring a local folder to a remote folder and Mirror window introduction help topics.

My knowledge with Fetch is limited and I am just coming off from upgrading from an older version.
I'm simply using Fetch to access my server's space to exchange files for clients.

Before, it was quite simple: I compress files using Stuffit, upload, then provide the link to the client which was instantly downloadable.

Now I have two new issues:

1. Every time I log in, I get the following message (which is new to me): "If you do not disconnect your password will be sent over the network in the clear." [Ignore} {Disconnect] Why is this? am I not logging in securely and if so, how?

2. I also upgraded my Compression app. (Stuffit). I only say that because it may be a factor with the file appendix and all, but my links including my domain name/file name.sit used to be accessible to clients just by clicking the links. Now, when I do an upload and create the link, the links lead to a "page not available" kind of page. The only thing new on my part, is that the new Stuffit saved the files as SITX files opposed to the previous SIT files. Would this prevent the download or is it more like a setting thing in my Fetch?

Thanks!

Hi FETCH Support!

I need some help! I have been a FETCH user for a couple years now, favorite client, way better than that CYBERduck nonsense! Anyways, I have just encountered my first error / message i can't get past using your application. I downloaded / paid for the latest version of Fetch, 5.5.3 for a MacPro, running OS 10.6.2 (Snow leopard). I have about a dozen FTP accounts hosted on my remote server, and i can't seem to login to them. I have tried multiple accounts, and it always gets the same message. I have checked my internet connection, my server is running, the domains are current, the dns records are correct, and still can't login. The error says: "Fetch could not get the file list because the FTP server sent an unexpected response. Check the Fetch Transcript window for more information." I click OK, try it again, restarted the program, my computer, my internet connection... you are my last resort! Please help! PS. While the error message is loaded, it says "Connected." at the bottom of the fetch window.... Get back to me when you can! I have websites that need changes and can't access them!
Sincerely,

Hi Scott -

Thanks for the reply. It's encouraging to know that you might consider this.

My basic needs are simple. I would like to be able to set up Shortcuts to various live and staging servers, upload and download files (of course), and occasionally change permissions. I took a look at the Apps currently available and none of them appear as robust and trustworthy as Fetch on my MacBook.

While I don't currently have experience with the iPod/Pad, one area I think might be tricky could be file management on these devices?

Looking back from where we came, it's not terribly far-fetched that this sort of development could be on the horzon.

Thanks
