Fetch and BBEdit question - downloading php files (12 posts)

    Using BBEDIT 8.2.4 and Fetch on a Macintosh running OSX.

    When I Get .php extension files, a dialog box comes up from StuffitExpander saying the following:

    The file "whatever.php" does not appear to be compressed or encoded. The application "BBEdit.app" might to be able to open this file. Would you like to try opening the file using "BBEdit.app"?

    If I click on Don't Try - the file opens fine with BBEdit.

    But I have to see this dialog and click on Don't Try for EVERY file!

    When I download .jpg or .html files, no dialog box, no problems.

    I've looked around and can't seem to find a setting to make it stop doing this.

    Could you please tell us version of Fetch are you using? The solution depends on which version it is.

    I am having similar problems. When I try to open a php file, that I download from Fetch, it keeps opening as a blank file. I know it's not blank because a database is using it...
    I'm using Fetch 5.0.4 and running OSX, opening the files using Text Edit.

    Hi "this blue",

    If you select one of your php files in Fetch, and click the View button in the toolbar, does a Fetch window showing you the contents of the file show up?

    Could you please post a transcript to help us figure out what's going on? After you download a php file, choose Fetch Transcript from the Window menu, and copy the contents of the transcript window, and paste it here.

    Yes, I can see the file in "View," but it remains blank when I download it (this doesn't happen for other files).

    I wonder if the file you're opening isn't the same file that Fetch is downloading (since the Fetch transcipt shows a 3KB file being transferred).

    One way you could test this theory is to select header.php and click Get Info in Fetch. Under "Transfer Options", set the After transferring a file like this option to "Save and open the file". And make sure the "Open files like this with:" menu is set to TextEdit. Then go back to the transfer window and click Get -- the file should be downloaded and opened in TextEdit for you. Is it blank when you do that?

    Hi again,

    Yes, I've done that. For a while, it wouldn't show TextEdit, only TexEdit, in my options for editing the file. I followed the instructions and rebuilt my launch database (twice), and now it shows only TextEdit in the menu. However, when I download and open the file, it's still blank.

    I suppose I can copy the information from the View option and just use and upload that...

    It sounds like you tried something other than what I suggested; I was not suggesting using the Edit command or "Edit the file" transfer option. I was suggesting setting the "After transfering a file like this:" option to "Save and open the file." You would set the "Open files like this with:" menu to TextEdit (the "Edit files like this:" menu won't list TextEdit, for reasons explained in Fetch Help).

    Please let me know what happens when you make these settings and then select the .php file and click Get. Does Fetch automatically open the file in TextEdit? It would also be helpful to see the contents of the Fetch Transcript window.

    Sorry, I'm not being clear.

    I selected header.php. I chose Get Info. In Transfer Options, I chose "Save and Open the file with" and chose Text Edit. (What I meant before was that for a while, TextEdit was not showing up in that pulldown menu. Now it is.) When I choose to Get header.php, the file opens in Text Edit, but opens as a blank file.

    Thanks for the clarification. I think you're running into a "feature" of TextEdit. It tries to interpret the PHP file as HTML, and shows you the result (which is apparently blank) rather than the source code. I would try checking the "Ignore rich text commands in HTML files" box in the "Open and Save" section of TextEdit's Preferences window.

    Does that fix the problem?
