Fetch dog runs and runs, but can't get files! (7 posts)

    Hi,

In the past, I have downloaded and uploaded files from my Mac to a server which is not showing the file list now.

Fetch and server work OK for other colleagues, though.

I can successfully connect to Fetchsoftworks server.

I have no message: the Fetch dog runs and runs, but can't get files!

I have followed instructions from Fetchsoftworks: 1. The Fetch dog runs and runs but the file list never appears.

I have wireless internet access through a Motorola router.

Any suggestions will be very much appreciated.

    Hi Lola,

After you connect and the dog runs and runs, could you please choose Fetch Transcript from the Window menu, copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message? We'll take a look and try to figure out what's going on.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Hi Lola,

    Try doing the following:

    * Choose Preferences from the Fetch menu.
    * Click the General tab.
    * Make sure the "Use passive mode transfers (PASV)" checkbox is checked.
    * Then click the Miscellaneous tab.
    * Make sure the "Use 'LIST -al' command to reveal hidden files" checkbox is checked.

And then try connecting again. If that does not fix the problem, please send us another transcript.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

It worked! Thank you very much for your help, Scott.

There's still the mystery of why was I able to connect to Fetchsoftworks and see the files, but could not see or get the files from my server. Any idea?

    Thanks again!

    Lola

    HI Lola,

Great, glad to hear it's working now.

Some servers need the "LIST -al" command to see file lists properly; your server is one of them, while fetchsoftworks.com is not.

Also, it looks like your server wasn't working correctly with active mode, which is what Fetch tries first when the "passive mode" checkbox is unchecked. If active mode doesn't work, Fetch does try passive mode, but by that point your server was confused and didn't want to talk to Fetch. fetchsoftworks.com, on the other hand, works with active mode connections.

Basically fetchsoftworks.com is compatible with most of the possible settings in Fetch, moreso than many other servers.

    I hope that makes sense.

    Best,

    Scott McGuire
