Just out of curiosity, what are they, what's the history? Why do we have an "send LIST -al to UNIX servers"? Isn't LIST supposed to return everything but the kitchen sink?

    A bit puzzled ...

They are options that most users should never need, but occasionally they are necessary. Many are there to work around server bugs. Servers should return a list of all files and directories when an FTP client sends the LIST command, but some don't; some require the non-standard LIST -al. So instead of telling users who can't see files like .htaccess "tough luck, you have to get your service provider to fix their server" we added that option to work around the problem.

    Thanks,
