Fetch quits when making a connection to FTP Site (6 posts)

    I have a couple machines where I can launch Fetch but as soon as I try to connect to an FTP site Fetch quits. No error messages. I've gotten rid of all preferences with no luck. Same issue from another user profile. Re-installed and same issue.

    Are there any known issues or incompatibilities between Fetch and other 3rd party software.

    Fetch Version - 5.0.5
    OS - 10.4.11

    Thanx,
    Cyrus

    Hi Cyrus,

    We are not aware of any incompatibilities with 3rd party software that would cause this sort of problem.

    The first thing I would suggest is try downloading our latest version, Fetch 5.3, and seeing if you experience the same problem with it. (Fetch 5.3 is a free update for all Fetch 5 users.)

    Let us know if you experience the same problem with 5.3 or not. If the problem still happens, we'll investigate further.

    Thanks,

    Scott,

    Thanx for the quick response. The only reason I asked about 3rd party conflict was based on this thread http://tinyurl.com/cumrkd titled "Problems w/ fetch as soon as Startup"

    More Info:

    - I can't duplicate this issue on my lab hardware which is built exactly like the users.
    - So far no other users (I'm in a larger user environment, ~200 users) are having this issue with the exception of 2 users having reported issues.
    - The only known change at this point is deployment of OS patches which are as follows:
    • AirPortUtility.pkg
    • MacBookProSoftwareUpdate1.2.pkg
    • MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.11Intel.pkg
    • iPhoto_606.pkg
    • iTunesX.pkg
    • QuickTime76_Tiger.pkg
    • SecUpd2008-008Intel.pkg
    • JavaForMacOSX10.4Release6.
    • Safari3.2.1Ti.pkg
    • JavaForMacOSX10.4Release7.pkg

    Again, all above has been applied to all machines including the lab machine and we are seeing this on only two machines.

    Users having issue are on MBP 2.16 and lab machine is MBP 2.4

    Given this info, would you still recommend trying 5.3 or would you suspect something else?

    Thanx,
    Cyrus

    Hi Cyrus,

    That thread mentions that the user believes Application Enhancer was the source of his problems; that is a possibility. Application Enhancer is a frequent source of conflicts with many things because of the modifications it makes to the operating system. However, we are not aware of any always reproducible conflict with even Application Enhancer, and I'm sure you don't have it installed on your lab machines.

    From time to time, there are odd configuration or corruption issues on specific machines that can cause Fetch problems; we attempt to put in fixes for those when we can, although of course, sometimes the problem needs to be fixed elsewhere.

    But we've done a lot of work on and put a lot of fixes into Fetch since 5.0.5, so yes, I believe trying 5.3 on those two Macs would be worthwhile.

    I realize that you may want to use a consistent version of Fetch on all of your machines. If you want to send us a Fetch 5.0.5 crash log from one of those machines, we'll take a look and see if we have any suggestions about what the cause of the problem might be and if it can be fixed outside of Fetch; but please understand that if it's not relatively obvious what's going on, our next step in analyzing the problem will be to ask you to try the newer version of Fetch.

    If you want, to find the Fetch.crash.log:

    * Choose "Home" from the Go menu in the Finder
    * Open the Library folder
    * Open the Logs folder
    * Open the CrashReporter folder

    Please send it to:

    bugs at fetchsoftworks dot com

    along with a short description of the problem.

    Thanks,

    ISSUE RESOLVED by upgrading users to Fetch v5.3.

    In our case this issue was ONLY effecting users on MBP-2.16 after they were upgraded to OS 10.4.11. Prior to the upgrade they were on OS 10.4.10 and Fetch v5.0.5 worked just fine.

    FYI...In our environment we also use MBP-2.4 and MPB-2.5 on OS 10.4.11 and 10.5.4 and 10.5.6 and Fetch v5.0.5 works with not trouble.
