Fetch stalls at 88k per file... (8 posts)

    Hi! I have an intermittent problem with Fetch 5.0.5. It sometimes (but not always!) stalls out at 88k when uploading jpeg files. Let's say a file is 115k; Fetch will instantly say it has downloaded "115k of 115k" (even if it hasn't) but will continue to upload until the file size reaches 88k. Then it will slow down, and eventually stall out. The part of the file that is uploaded will look fine; it's just cut off at the bottom. If I shut everything down and restart the computer, it usually (but again, not always!) takes care of the problem. This is not good! I am running OS 10.4.5. Any suggestions? (Thanks!)

    Hi,

    We'd like some more information about your problem.

    Do you use Airport or another sort of router to share your Internet connection between computers?

    Does it stall with any sort of file, or only JPEG files?

    The next time you experience a stall, could you please choose Fetch Transcript from the Window menu, copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them here? We'll take a look and try to figure out what's going on.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Hi, Scott,

    I don't use an Airport; I connect to the internet via Ethernet with an ISDN router... I did discover something new yesterday. It seems if I upload something smaller than 88k first (like an html file - or perhaps it's just something other than a jpeg???), after that it will upload the larger jpeg files without a problem! Here is the transcript; it's still open from when I had the problem, you can see where I uploaded the html file and then suddenly the other files were fine. This has happened enough that I'd sure like to know what's going on! - I've been a Fetch user since about 1995 and have never encountered anything like this before... Thanks, here's the transcript:

    Hi,

    Thanks for the additional information.

    A couple of more questions for you...

    Do you have this problem with just this server, or with all servers?

    And, related to that, what happens if you try the following:

    * Quit Fetch.
    * Start Fetch again.
    * Connect to ftp://ftp.fetchsoftworks.com
    * Try uploading a few of the JPEG files that causs a problem to the "incoming" folder on ftp.fetchsoftworks.com . (That's a drop folder - you can put stuff in it, but not see inside it. We routinely delete everything uploaded to it.)

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Hello again! Seems like this happens with all servers - I do a small amount of web design, and have about a dozen different servers I log into regularly, and I think it has happened with pretty much all of them. However they're all hosted by Interland (now Web.com - I think!) and are all Unix servers, don't know if that's of any help. I just restarted Fetch and tested out one of the files that stalled yesterday (and then loaded, after the html file), and it stalled again, just like before. So I am currently uploading it to your folder - the file is "clematis.jpg" and should be 107.9KB in size. Incidentally, what usually happens is, I hit the upload button, and for an instant there is the famous Mac spinning Pinwheel Of Death. Then it shows "107.9 of 107.9KB" plus the number of bytes per second; then, after it reaches 88KB, it shows "(stalled)" after the bytes per second. If I don't cancel it, it'll go on like that for hours...

    I've left it "uploading" (the dog is running, but it still says "stalled") I'll be gone for a few hours. Thanks again!

    Hi,

    I see that your upload to ftp.fetchsoftworks.com has stalled in the same place.

    Unfortunately, that means this appears to be a problem caused by your router; there's no Fetch setting to adjust to fix the problem.

    You may want to talk to your local network admin or your ISP and see if they can figure out a solution.

    You could also try another FTP client, such as Interarchy, and see if the uploads work properly with it.

    And as a last resort, you do have the work around of uploading a small file first and then uploading the rest.

    Sorry not to have a better answer,
