I have a user on my network (Novell 5.0 & NT 4.0) running a new G4. To get to the web we go through MSProxy. He can get through the proxy ok but whenever he uploads files to our website using Fetch the files get corrupted. I'm a PC guy and I don't know how to fix this. Everything else works fine for him, but Fetch and the proxy don't seem to be able to play together. Any ideas?

Can you be more specific about the nature of the corruption (i.e. is data missing, is there extra data, is the file size off by a little or a lot)? Also, it would be useful to know what version of Fetch the user is running, and what the settings are in the "Firewall" section of Preferences.

    Thanks,

He is using Fetch 3.01. When he uploads his files the file size drops to 0k. He's using the Socks proxy (enabled on the proxy) at port 1080. He was wondering if there is a site where he could upload a file to Fetch Softworks to have someone from there take a look at it. Would that be possible?

    Thanks,

Yes -- he should be able to upload to the "incoming" folder on ftp.fetchsoftworks.com. Post a note here when the file's been uploaded.

(ftp.fetchsoftworks.com supports anonymous FTP, so no userid or password is needed)

Whenever he tries to connect to the Softworks ftp site the dog doesn't run and he gets the following message:

    error number-3162

He has to close and restart Fetch to get it going again. He IS able to get in to other sites. He has tried connecting as anonymous and with a blank login. Same result. I'm ready for "Plan B."

When you get the -3162 error is there anything in the Fetch Transcript window?

There's only one line that says it's connecting on port 21 to your ftp site. No errors or any other messages.

PS Should he be trying standard ftp site login procedures: anonymous w/e-mail password?

PS Should he be trying standard ftp site login procedures: anonymous w/e-mail password?

Leaving the fields blank should be equivalent, but go ahead and give that a try. And make sure he's connecting to ftp.fetchsoftworks.com (and not just fetchsoftworks.com).

Can he connect to, say, ftp.apple.com? ftp.iomega.com? Or ftp.smokeworks.com?

    Thanks!

At this point Eric says that there is only one site that he can connect to, and that's the site where our website is being hosted. The other ftp sites that you listed all give him the same error--the dog doesn't run, and he gets the 3162 error. Also, he has to close and restart fetch before it works again.

    Thanks for the help,

Perhaps the proxy (or a firewall) only allows connections to specific sites.

Could the user upload a file to the site doing his web hosting, in a place where I could download it? It would also help to see the contents of Fetch Transcript after the upload.
