Hi Peggy,
Could you try connecting again, and then choose "Fetch Transcript" from the Window menu and post the entire contents of that window? That should provide clues that we can use to figure out what is going on.
Thanks,
Jim Matthews

I have the exact same problem, Core FTP LE on my PC and other people can use the identical hostname, password etc. and it connects.
here's the transcript:
Fetch 5.6 (5F64) PowerPC running on Mac OS X 10.4.11 (8S165) PowerPC English
StuffIt Engine 0x820, StuffIt SDK Version 10.1.1b1
Partial serial FETCH55001-MSLQ-X5S5 T
Update check skipped at 3/8/12 5:20 PM (next check after 3/16/12 5:50 AM)
Connecting to kwaderer.mayfirst.org port 22 (Mac OS X firewall is off) (3/8/12 5:26 PM)
Connected to 216.66.23.40 port 22 (3/8/12 5:26 PM)
SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.5p1 Debian-6+squeeze1
An FTP connection to “kwaderer.mayfirst.org” could not be opened because the FTP server dropped the connection. (Try again, or contact the server administrator to verify that the server is running.
Server responded: “
SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.5p1 Debian-6+squeeze1”) -

Hi Konrad,
Try setting the "Connect to:" menu to SFTP; does that help?
Thanks,

Yes, that worked, thanks!

An FTP connection to my organization's ftp site cannot be opened because the message says the FTP server dropped the connection and to verify the server is running. I can access the ftp site from a OC using WinSCP with no problem but had trouble with the free trial AND the paid 5.6 version. the message also says the Server responded SSH-1.99-OpenSSH_3.6.1p2
Thanks.
