FTP server dropped the connection (88 posts)

An FTP connection to my organization's ftp site cannot be opened because the message says the FTP server dropped the connection and to verify the server is running. I can access the ftp site from a OC using WinSCP with no problem but had trouble with the free trial AND the paid 5.6 version. the message also says the Server responded SSH-1.99-OpenSSH_3.6.1p2

    Thanks.

    Hi Peggy,

Could you try connecting again, and then choose "Fetch Transcript" from the Window menu and post the entire contents of that window? That should provide clues that we can use to figure out what is going on.

    Thanks,

    Hi Konrad,

Try setting the "Connect to:" menu to SFTP; does that help?

    Thanks,

    Hi,

Ever since I upgraded to the new version of Fetch 5.7.3 none of my FTP connections work for any server.
I also tried the SFTP as Jim Matthews suggested but it did not work.

    Hi Kent,

It looks like your hosting company does not support SFTP. What does the transcript look like if you set the "Connect using" menu to FTP?

I get further than that when I try to connect to kentandandrea.org, so I don't think the problem is with the server. That suggests a problem with your connection to the Internet. You might try restarting your router or cable modem (if that's how you are connecting to the Internet).

I am in Mozambique, Africa so is it possible the internet may be too weak. I tried publishing the website a few months back and it looks like the welcome page almost made it up. Talked to Godaddy yesterday and found out the www. was pointing to the old mac.com (mobileme) site. After fixing that now I am trying to re-publish the entire website.

Maybe you can help me with another question. When publishing the 2nd website do I do it through the New folder and can I publish more sites?

I did see the other day the welcome page was published on the same window and my kentpowellart site.
    a bit confused still

    Hi,

You should contact the people who run the server -- the people who told you to connect to 94.74.144.178 -- and let them know that the server at that address is not responding. Perhaps the address has been changed.

    Thanks,

    Hi,

I wonder if you've hit your storage quota on the server. The server seems to be stopping uploads at the same point in the file each time Fetch tries. You might try deleting some files from the server (if there are any you can spare), or contacting the server administrator to see what the storage quota situation looks like.

    Thanks,

It looks like you can connect to www.erinnorwood.tv with FTP, but not with SFTP. You might ask the web hosting company why you can not connect with SFTP.

Ah, now I see that you aren't getting a file list when you try FTP.

Have you tried Fetch 5.7.3, the latest version? You can download a trial version from:

Hi, I have used Fetch on and off since 2009 and I have had the same problem occur when I haven't used it for awhile. I just downloaded the newest version into my Macbook Air running Mountain Lion 10.8.4 and it won't connect at all to the only organization I need to connect with through the ftp site. When I try through the regular FTP system I get the error message that the FTP server has shut down. When I try using SFTP I get the error message that the server has rejected my password--which is a CORRECT password. This is really annoying because I have had this happen before with Fetch when I first started using it, and I cannot remember what I had to do to fix it.

    Hi,

I would contact the organization to make sure you have the correct login information (FTP or SFTP, hostname, username and password). Perhaps the information has changed since the last time you logged in?

    Thanks,

Nope I have all the current info--I had to get it from the organization again when they uploaded something to the ftp site I had to access yesterday. All the information is correct.

Did they say whether to use FTP or SFTP?
