Could you quit Fetch, open it again, try to connect, and then choose "Fetch Transcript" from the Window menu and post the contents of that window? That might give me clues to the problem.
Thanks,
Jim Matthews

Hi,
The server is rejecting your login information, either because the information is incorrect, or because there's a server problem that is blocking your access (e.g. a problem with your home directory).
I would try logging in with a username of "hrrh" rather than "hrrh@berghahnbooksonline.com", in case that's the issue. If that doesn't work could you post the transcript again?
Thanks,
Jim Matthews

Alas, Jim, the same thing happened. I am going to contact Berghahn and see if the tech guru there is having a problem with the ftp site.

Hi,
Have you been able to connect to this ftp server (ftp.friesens.com) from your Mac in the past, or is this the first time you've tried?
Thanks,
Jim Matthews

Yes I've been able to connect to it before. The Mac has changed its location though, it went from being at my school to my house. Does that affect it at all?
-
Jim Matthews Administrator
Yes, the location of your Mac makes a difference. Fetch is not able to connect due to networking problems, and your connection to the Internet is one possible factor. Do you have a home router or wireless base station? If so, you might try restarting it, to see if that changes anything.
Thanks,

Hi,
I'm able to get a bit further connecting to ftp.countrysampler.com, so if you are still having this problem I would suspect a problem with your Internet connection. I would try again, and if you still can't connect try contacting your Internet Service Provider.
Thanks,

I have daily job running to make ftp connection. Sporadically connection hangs after below line. Any idea what could be the possible reason? If I re-run the script again it makes the connection and do the job correctly.

Hi,
I don't think FatCow supports SFTP, so I'm not surprised that SFTP connections there are rejected. As for FTP connections, did they work for you in the past? Do you recall when they stopped working?
The SFTP issue with ftp.cooperwoodsculptor.com seems unrelated, so I'd start by trying to figure out the ftp.fatcow.com problem.
Thanks,

Jim,
Sorry, I posted this twice. Fetch 5.7.3 worked Wednesday, then updated to 5.7.4 and hasn't worked since. -
Jim Matthews Administrator
I don't think this has to do with the 5.7.4 update; I've gotten three other reports of this problem in the last few days, and one thing the reports have in common is that the problem affects multiple versions of Fetch, and affects FTP clients other than Fetch. So it appears that it's an issue on the network/server side.
I'm trying to find more common elements between these reports, so I could use some more information. What company provides your Internet service, and where are you geographically?
Thanks,
Jim Matthews

We were on AT&T U-verse until Monday afternoon when we switched to Webpass, but did connect after that using Fetch 5.7.3. We are in Miami, FL.
-
Jim Matthews Administrator
Thanks for that information. I've gotten another report just now, but I've yet to find a common thread that connects the five reports to date. The servers are at different hosting companies, and use different FTP server software. The reports have come from the U.S., the UK, and Canada. Three reports mention running on Yosemite, another is on Lion (10.7). You're the first person to let me know who your ISP is, but it seems unlikely that you're all using Webpass.
Could you try connecting to ftp.fatcow.com, but intentionally enter an incorrect password, and then post the contents of the Fetch Transcript window? I would like to see if the transcript you get differs from what I see from my Mac.
Thanks,
Jim Matthews

Hi Tiffany and Bill,
Another user who reported this problem was able to fix it by changing the firewall settings in Norton Internet Security. Are either of you using that product?
Thanks,

Hi Jim
I use Norton Anti-Virus, but not the firewall product.
Tiffany

Jim Matthews Administrator
It might be worth trying to disable Norton Anti-Virus to see if that makes any difference. The fact that this is affecting a number of people located all over, using different web hosts and ISPs and FTP clients, could be explained by an update to a widely-used anti-virus or Internet security package.
Thanks,

Hi all,
I ran into the same problems this AM, Fetch 5.7.4, Mac OS 10.9.4. Double-checked with an associate on a separate system to ensure the FTP server was working fine on their side. Problem was on my side. I do have Norton Internet Security for Mac with the firewall enabled and it seems that's mucking up the works.
Would love to know the final resolution of this, but here's what worked for me for the moment. I closed Fetch. I opened up the Norton firewall settings, disabled both the firewall and the advanced protection. Then I opened Fetch and it works fine again. Not a permanent fix, obviously, but it got me up and working again for the moment.
Seems Fetch and Norton aren't happy with each other today. Today was first time encountering problem, though I hadn't used Fetch since last weekend.

I had the same 331 password required error after updating Fetch to 5.7.4 on Mac OS X 10.9.5. All ftp Clients return a password error message - even though no login details have been changed. Been at this 3 days now. Although login details appear correctly input, something is happening to drop the connection whilst trying to communicate with ANY server.
I would add that entering the ftp address in another computer's web Browser (Windows) does work. So this issue is only with this System/setup.

Hi Al
Thanks for your input, as it is the problem. I disabled the advanced protection and now Fetch is working fine. I have been using Fetch and Norton forever and have never had a problem until today. I will continue to monitor this thread for a permanent fix.
Thanks again!

FTP--that is how I have used the site before. I even loaded stuff onto it using my older desktop a few months ago. Haven't had any trouble until I downloaded the new app into my new laptop. I have tried everything I can think of to make it work, including checking the certificate is okay and approving access to it.
