FTP server dropped the connection (88 posts)

Yes I do use Norton. But I suffered a double-whammy. I updated Fetch 5.5.2 to 5.7.4 which appeared to trigger the whole ftp fail in the first place - with all ftp Clients. Rooting around for a solution, I noticed there was no longer an update for Norton AntiVirus for Mac. Thought I should take care of that, but a new product 'Norton Security' was taking its place, so I happened to purchase it on 27th, which perhaps also affected ftp functions.

The day after installing Norton security, 28th Nov, I used LiveUpdate to get it current. Turned all options OFF at which point Norton offered to "Fix it". Accepted the Fix it (which configures everything to recommended default settings). Then Shutdown for the night AND unplugged everything.

Today, 29th Nov, Fetch is working! So are other ftp Clients. I plugged everything back in (with all cables connected to Mac, Router and Time Machine as normal) but did not startup. Instead, I unplugged all cables to the Router. Waited 2 minutes. Inserted all cables back into Router. Started up. Launched Fetch and successfully connected to the Server.

So although Fetch appeared to trigger the whole fail thing, either Norton LiveUpdate? or the cable removal/insertion fixed something? Guess I'll never know, but perhaps this offers some hope to others with the same issue.

With Fetch 5.74 on Mac 10.9.5, no Norton, I'm suddenly getting:

SFTP connection to “www.lehet.com” could not be opened because the connection to the SFTP server could not be established or was lost. (Try again, or contact the server administrator to verify that you have the correct hostname, username, password, and authentication method, and that the server is running.
Server responded: “ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host

    ”)

Of course this has worked up to now. I'm hosted on pair. I launched ForkLift, and it instantly connected with SFTP.

    John:

I would suggest doing the following:

    1) In the Finder, choose Go to Folder… from the Go menu
    2) Enter:

    ~/.ssh

    and click Go
    3) Drag known_hosts to the trash
    4) Try connecting with Fetch

Let me know if that helps.

    Thanks,

    This worked. Thanks!

I have a vague memory of having to delete this file before within the last 6 or 9 months or so. I wonder what's munging it.

    Hi Hugo,

It looks like the ftp.ww2rps.com server is not responding. You should contact the hosting company that runs that server, to let them know that their server is down, and to find out when it will be available again.

    Thanks,

I tried to log in to Fetch and thought I was using the correct information, and it says that it is not able to connect due to incorrect password. Nothing I've tried works (I don't know much about computers) and I could really use some assistance.
It would be very helpful to speak with someone per phone since I know so little and I think it would clear up some basic misunderstandings.
I've used Fetch since the inception of my website in 2006.
It would seem that it is common courtesy for a company to be able to speak with its customers per phone and I would appreciate being able to speak with someone about the problem directly.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

You need to contact your web hosting company. They are the ones that can reset your password.

    Jim,
I've just started getting this error message when I try to connect with Fetch. I've been accessing my website for years this way with no problem. Now suddenly I get: "An ftp connection cannot be opened because the ftp server dropped the connection."

    Here is the Fetch transcript:
    Connected to 98.139.135.35 port 21 (2015-07-24, 4:11 PM)
An FTP with TLS/SSL connection to “ftp.xxxxxxxxx.com” could not be opened because the FTP server dropped the connection. (Try again, or contact the server administrator to verify that the server is running.)
Connecting to ftp.xxxxxxxxxxx.com port 21 (Mac OS X firewall is allowing connections) (2015-07-24, 4:12 PM)
    Connected to 98.139.135.35 port 21 (2015-07-24, 4:12 PM)
An FTP with TLS/SSL connection to “ftp.xxxxxxxxxxx.com” could not be opened because the FTP server dropped the connection. (Try again, or contact the server administrator to verify that the server is running.)

I've tried SFTP, straight FTP, but same message. Suggestions?

    Hi,

Thanks for posting your transcript. You are correct to be specifying FTP with TLS/SSL. I just tried connecting to the same IP address, and I didn't get the dropped connection message (I couldn't log in, because I don't have the username and password for an account, but I got further than you did in the transcript). That suggests it might have been a temporary problem. I have one other report of this error from a Yahoo!-hosted account. That user runs OS X 10.7.5 on his Mac; what version of OS X are you running?

    Thanks,

    Hi,

I'm able to connect to ftp.epnet.com, so it could be it was just a temporary problem (I can't actually log in, because I don't have an account, but I can get far enough to get a "login incorrect" error). If you are still seeing this problem I would try restarting your Mac. If that doesn't help I would contact your ISP.

    Thanks,

I can open Fetch 5.7.5 and log in with a shortcut, but as soon as I click on a folder Fetch shuts down with the UNEXPECTED QUIT notice. It does this on every site that I try.

    Hi

I have signed on to Fetch for the past eight years using the drop-down menu next to "Hostname" (with the clock icon). I accidentally deleted the drop-down menu items today. Now I am getting an error message when I go to sign in with what I know is the correct Hostname, Username, and Password. I also know the server is up and running.
Error message: "An FTP with TLS/SSL connection to "ftp.avalonpub.com" could not be opened because the FTP server dropped the connection. Try again, or contact the server administrator to verify that the server is running.

    Can you help?

Fetch has worked well since 2005.

Last week began getting message "could not be opened because the FTP server dropped the connection. (Try again, or contact the server administrator to verify that the server is running.)"

Fetch worked earlier in the day, then quit connecting. Has not connected since.

Server admin says " I was able to get into both the FTP accounts using these credentials. That means the problem is with your FTP client. I'd suggest updating the software or trying a different FTP client."

    So I downloaded latest Fetch.

    Still doesn't work.

    Hi Jim,

I also have a connectivity issue. First, let me say >>> thanks for updating the Fetch software for all of these years.

    The basics:
    - Connecting to ftp.eoddata.com with a username and password
    - Using basic ftp. I tried SFTP and FTP with/TSL, etc and none of these other options worked.
    - I am trying to mirror from this site to my local computer. There are about 26000 files with about 50 in a main folder and the other 26000 in a few sub-folders.
    - The initial mirror worked well and I copied about 75% of the site.
    - The problem occurs when restarting the mirror. Fetch starts checking the attributes of each file to see if it needs to be copied. It reads about 2000 or so files and then reports an error that that ftp connection was dropped.
    - I have tried several times and it does not stop on the same file each time, but goes a little more or less into the subdirectories.
    - I have tried this from both wireless and hardwired ethernet using Comcast as the internet provider.

    - I am assuming that the problem is on the host side, but it there any setting in Fetch that I could try? For example, Could Fetch retry the connection after a minute or so and then restart from where it left off? It never get's through the 26000 files, so it never completes the mirror.
    - Or, could Fetch be set to only mirror the top directory and not all of the sub-directories? It is the top directory that changes each day.

Here is the transcript, and thanks for the help,

    David

    Hi,

Thanks for posting. Usually Fetch does try to automatically resume a failed operation; I'm not sure why that isn't happening here, but that's something we could investigate further. Unfortunately there's no way to tell the mirror command to ignore subdirectories.

The other approach would be to ask the server administrators to set a longer timeout. My guess is that the server is dropping the connection because a certain amount of time has elapsed without a file transfer happening.

    Thanks,

    Jim Matthews

    Hi Jim,

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried a couple of different tests on the server.
    1) Opened the ftp connection to get the basic directory list and then waited. The server then drops the connection after about 5 minutes.
    2) Tried the mirror command. Fetch starts checking the 26000 files on the server to see if anything has changed. I had previously transferred about 75% of the files. The connection drops again after 5 minutes before Fetch has found any files to transfer.
    3) Tried the above a few different times, and it always drops after 5 minutes.

This helps very much in order to see what the source of the problem is. I will check with the vendor to see if they can increase this timeout. However, they would have to increase this to about 30 minutes in order to get through the entire directory.

Please let me know if you would like to test any Fetch modifications, or if there is a way to ping the server every so often in order to keep it awake, or transfer a file every few minutes even if it was previously transferred.

Thanks and have a good holiday.
    David
