Getting "file cannot be accessed" dialog (8 posts)

    I have two or three folders that I cannot delete in the transfer window. The dialog I get is "xyz file the system cannot find the specified file. " I have tried to open up the folder to delete files inside and I get the same message. One of the items is also an archive (uu format), and I can't do anything with that either. I have had this problem before, but have usually been able to resolve it by going inside the folders and deleting files within. Working on a mac running OS 10.6.8. Thank you. These were uploaded from a different mac but I have done this many times before between the two machines.

    Hi,

    Thanks for contacting us. Could you try refreshing the file list (choose Refresh from the View menu), then try deleting one of the files, and then choose "Fetch Transcript" from the Window menu and post the contents of that window? That will hopefully give us some clues to what is going on.

    Thanks for posting that transcript. The server is listing the "Other WhitePapers" and "Other WhitePapers.uu" items, but then claiming that they are not there when you try to delete them.

    Here's a work-around that might help:

    1) Go to the FWFAOWhitePaper folder containing the "Other WhitePapers" and "Other WhitePapers.uu" items
    2) Choose "Send FTP Commands…" from the Remote menu
    3) Enter:

    SITE DIRSTYLE

    and click the "Send Commands" button
    4) Try to delete the items

    If that still does not work, could you send the transcript again?

    Yes, by all means.

    The source of the problem (I'm guessing) is that these items had names starting with one or more space characters. This server's regular file list style removes those spaces, causing the "file not found" errors. The command you sent tells the server to use a different file list style, which does not remove the spaces.

    So one lesson to take away from this is that it's a bad idea to give files names that start with spaces. Of course I don't think that often happens on purpose; it's usually an accident.

    That's great. And yes, I wouldn't normally name a file starting with a space or any other characters which might create server conflicts, but I could see it happening by mistake here and there.

    Again, my sincere thanks. Though by no means a power user, I have used Fetch for years and love the program!
    Being able to get support almost immediately via the web is just the icing on the cake!
