The server is saying that you can't login with that user id and password. That may indicate a problem with the password, but it may indicate some other problem (e.g. a problem with the account). Can you get a transcript from the Windows machine where logins are working? It would be interesting to compare the two transcripts.

    Thanks,

That's very strange. I'd try choosing "Don't send ADAT probe command" from the Obscure Options pop-up menu in the Misc. section of Fetch Preferences. Does that change the behavior any? If not could you post a transcript?

    Thanks,

Assuming that you're typing the same password in each case, Fetch is sending exactly the same commands as the Windows FTP client, but the server is not letting it log in. My best guess is that the server is distinguishing the two cases by some other mechanism. For example, it could be accepting connections from certain IP addresses (including the Windows machine) but rejecting them from others (including your Mac).

I would talk to the server administrator about the possibility that there is some security measure (beyond checking usernames and passwords) that is keeping you from logging in from your Mac.

    Thanks,

    Jim Matthews

I have spoken to the admin of the server and he cannot explain why I am unable to ftp from my MAC.

Will the fact that I am using a wireless connection on the MAC have an effect on my ability to ftp?

    Cheers

Are your Mac and the server both on a company network? Perhaps the server restricts logins from the wireless part of the network, as a security precaution. Is it feasible to connect your Mac to the network directly and try from there?

    Thanks,

Hi there, it would apppear as though this is a re-occurring problem. I am experiencing exactly the same problem. i am using fetch 3.0.3 . I am using the correct details as typed on the WSFTP program on the PC but to no avail on the mac. here is the transcript from fetch:

    Connecting to 192.168.10.254 port 21 (9/12/03 2:20:14 pm)
    220 inty.metropolis.com FTP server (Version 6.00LS) ready.
    USER TPL@ftp.tplprinters.com
    331 Password required for TPL@ftp.tplprinters.com.

here is the one for the PC:

    connecting to 212.240.52.131:21

    Connected to 212.240.52.131 port 21

    220 FTP-Server Microsoft FTP Service (Version 5.0).

    USER TPL

    331 Password required for TPL.

    PASS (hidden)

230-Welcome To TPL Printers(UK) Ltd FTP Server

    230 User TPL logged in.

    PWD

    257 "/" is current directory.

    SYST

    215 Windows_NT version 5.0

    Host type (S): Microsoft NT

    PASV

    227 Entering Passive Mode (212,240,52,131,6,84)

    connecting to 212.240.52.131:1620

    - -

    connecting to 212.240.52.131:1620

    Connected to 212.240.52.131 port 1620

    LIST

125 Data connection already open; Transfer starting.

Received 975 bytes in 0.1 secs, (90.00 Kbps), transfer succeeded

    226 Transfer complete.

The macs in the office connect via DHCP with no username or password and the PC's via DHCP but with a username and password.

Please advise what could be causing this problem as i have been told by the people that maintain our gateway server that port 21 is open and they can see activity when i try to connect via fetch.

    Regards,

    David

metropolis: Try unchecking the proxy server setting in the Firewall section of Fetch Preferences. Does that work? If not, what does the transcript contain?

    Jim,

Apologies for not replying sooner. I have had the opportunity to connect my MAC directly to a network and I can still not login in to my sever using fetch.

Am thinking my problem is related directly to this server because I have no problem logging in to other servers both wirelessly and via an Ethernet cable.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

    Karl

I think it's a server issue too, but I don't know how the server can tell whether you're connecting from a Mac or a Windows machine.
