index.htm not show up after being created and "saved as" by MS Word (6 posts)

I used MS Word to create an index.htm and save it into the folder where I stored all of my pages. While the save process is finished without a problem it becomes invisible in the folder. And when I open Fetch to put it to my internet server, I cannot find it in the folder either. Except for this problem everything is working fine, and I can see all other files and sub-folders. I don't know if this is problem with my Mac machine or with Fetch program. If it's because of my Mac, how to make it shown up (something related to "hidden file")? If it is because of Fetch, how can I make it visible in my folder when I put and browse it? Many thanks.

    Hi,

This does not sound like a Fetch problem, but here are a couple of suggestions of things to try:

    (1) Use Spotlight or the Finder's Find command to search your Macintosh's hard drive to make sure the index.htm file is not in some other folder unexpectedly. If you find it someplace else, move it to the folder with all your other pages.

    (2) If you still can't find it, what happens if you try to save an index.htm file from Word into a different folder? Do you see it in that folder after you do that?

    Thanks,

I have tried the two options you suggested. The file (index.htm) is rightly in the folder with its associated sub-folder for pictures. But the file is just invisible. If I save it as a web page by Word into a different folder, it becomes visible. But, I want to stick to my original folder. It's so strange that it becomes invisible. Does something wrong with the settings of my Mac? I mean it probably just becomes a hidden file due to certain settings. If it becomes a hidden file, how can I change some settings of my Mac and turn it into visible and uploadable? This is time sensitive and I will appreciate your help very very much. Many thanks.

    Hi John,

What happens if you drag the (visible) copy of the file you saved in a different folder into the folder where you want it to be? Does it become visible when you do that?

I honestly cannot think how putting a file into a certain folder would cause it to become invisible.

There is no way built into Mac OS X to unhide "hidden" files. There are third party programs that can do it for you, although I don't know the name of one to suggest; you should try searching at www.macupdate.com or www.versiontracker.com for one.

Also, when you click the Put button in Fetch, at the bottom of the dialog there is a checkbox for "show hidden files." Have you tried checking that to see if allows you to see the file in Fetch? (It may not work, there are certain kinds of files Fetch cannot show because the Mac OS won't list them.)

    Thanks,

Thanks so much for your suggestions. This time I have tried to save the file as a web page file with suffix of html instead of htm, the file becomes visible. And it works now :)
