Losing Carriage Returns (6 posts)

Having a problem with losing carriage returns with Fetch 4.03. After previous problems with using "automatic", we started using "text" as the option and everything seemed to work. It's not every file but it's enough to cause a problem. These files are coming from a UNIX system and then transferred to a Mac environment via Fetch. We are talking 100s of files daily so it isn't an option to check every single one. Any suggestions?

So you are downloading the files from a UNIX server to your Mac, with the Mode pop-up set to "Text", and some files have the wrong line endings?

If a file fails, does it fail every time? If so it would help to figure out what is happening with one specific file. I'd be interested in knowing what looks wrong in the file (i.e. is all the text on one long line, or are there blank lines between each line?). I'd also want to know what program you are using to look at the files.

    Thanks,

The text becomes all one line (no blank lines in between). These files are imported into a 4D (4th Dimension) database and read by 4D. 4D requires that each record in the file be separated by a carriage return so when it does not see the carriage return, it thinks it is one long record and if you open the file using Simple Text or any other word processing app, it will appear as one long line of text.

If you use the View Text File command in the Remote menu is the file displayed correctly?

What have you set the "Text file line endings" menu to in the Download section of Preferences? Does changing the setting make a difference?

    Thanks,

I don't have those options under my Fetch Preferences menu that you mention (I am using 4.0.1).
