Mirror needs to filter dot files (4 posts)

I am trying to mirror a dir. For various reasons (primarily that I'm using SVN to version my website source) I have dot files in the tree. Even though I've checked the Obscure "dot not upload dot files" option, it persists in trying to upload them. And the ftp server I'm talking to won't take dot files so it always fails.

I don't know if it matters, but subversion maintains dot dirs, not files -- it uses a .svn subdir for its data. Is it possible that the option affects only files, not dirs? Or does the option only affect PUT, not mirror? Or is it something else?

    Hi,

The Mirror command does actually filter dot files when the "Do not upload dot files" preference is checked.

The real problem, as you've guessed, is that it only applies to files, not folders. We're aware of the issue with Subversion, so fixing it so that it also applies to folders is on our to-do list for a future version of Fetch.

In the meantime, one possible workaround is to set the folders' "visible" Finder attribute to be false - Fetch never copies invisible files or folders. This makes them inivisible in the Finder, though, and I'm not sure if how the Subversion clients handle the folders if they're invisible. There are several third-party tools for setting the Finder attributes of files and folders (you can't do it with the Finder itself).

Thanks, and sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks for the workaround, I'll give it a shot. I suspect it won't affect my clients, but if it does I'll post something back here -- silence means it worked.

    Hi,

If you're still interested, in the just-released Fetch 5.1b3 we have changed "do not upload dot files in folders" preference to apply to both files and folders (and we've changed its name to "do not upload dot items in folders").

This should keep Fetch from uploading .svn folders when doing mirroring.

You can download Fetch 5.1b3 from here: http://fetchsoftworks.com/Fetch_5.1b3.dmg

If you give it a try, please let us know if this does what you want.

    Thanks,
