I just downloaded Fetch 4.01 to try to do some mirror uploading of a website. The ftp server is on a machine on my lan running Webstar 4.4 ftp. I've perused this BB and did see some mention of mirror problems, but I'd like a little clarification...

First, the mirror appears to be uploading everything, not just changed files. I read something about some ftp servers not recognizing the MDTM command, and that must be the case here, since I get the "command MDTM unrecognized" in the transcript. But then I thought that it was supposed to check the modification date if MDTM didn't work... that doesn't appear to be happening.

Second, the upload quits every time with the error -3247 after several minutes. It's in the middle of uploading a folder of images at the time, although it doesn't stop at the same image every time.

Third, I'd post part of the transcript to show what is happening, but the transcript window doesn't show very much - just a certain number of lines. Unfortunately, when the -3247 error occurs, fetch then lists the contents of the current folder, which happens to have enough files that it completely fills the transcript window... is there a way to get the transcript window to show a longer history of commands?

Also, I've got internet config unchecked, and passive transfers checked.

I tried copying something from the transcript window as it was flying along - here's all I could get:

    226 STOR complete.
Upload complete at 2/2/02 4:32:14 PM
    MDTM A325s.jpg
    500 Command "MDTM A325s.jpg" unrecognized.
    PORT 192,168,1,250,65,147

Don't know if that helps much, but shows that the MDTM command is unrecognized.

You're right. That enhancement will be in Fetch 4.0.2, which will hopefully be available for testing later this month.

Second, the upload quits every time with the error -3247 after several minutes.

You mention that you've checked the "Use passive mode transfers (PASV)" box but the bit of transcript you posted showed Fetch using PORT rather than PASV. Could you double-check that setting?

is there a way to get the transcript window to show a longer history of commands?

Unfortunately, no. That's a possible enhancement for future releases.

Great! It would be wonderful to have this capability.

Ok, the passive transfer (in the Firewall tab in Preferences) was set... BUT, I have since then changed a setting on my ftp server which seems to have cleared up that problem (plus I rebooted my remote machine and restarted Fetch, but don't know if that had anything to do with it.) As I said, I'm using Webstar 4.4 ftp. The only thing I changed was the "Reported Server Name" from Mac OS WebSTAR FTP to UNIX Webstar FTP. After doing that, I was able to do the entire mirror upload without the -3247 error. Also, I have included a snippet from the current transcript:

    MDTM updatereply.html
    500 Command "MDTM updatereply.html" unrecognized.
    PASV
    227 Entering Passive Mode (192,168,1,246,40,157).
    STOR updatereply.html
    150 Transfer starting.
    226 STOR complete.
Upload complete at 2/4/02 1:04:40 PM

Also, I should have mentioned in my first message that my OS is OS 10.1.2.

About the transcript window - yes, it would be good at some point if it could hold more info, or if there was a way to log the transcript (maybe there is, and I just haven't figured out yet how to do it).

Thanks, Jim, for your reply, and for providing this forum, and your work on Fetch!

I also get the -3247 error during mirror uploads. It doesn't always happen (about half the time, maybe more), and it doesn't always happen on the same file or in the same directory.

I thought maybe the server might just happen to be serving a file at the same time it is being uploaded, but if you know what that error number means, then your guess is probably better than mine. I'm using WebSTAR 4.4's built-in FTP server.

I never get this error when I'm just uploading a single folder or a handful of files, so maybe fixing the MDTM mirror problem (where all the site files are being uploaded every time) would make this go away, too. My web site is about 500 files, give or take a few.

That error has to do with using an address that is already in use. FTP clients and servers have to open a new connection for each transfer, so it's possible that that either Fetch or Webstar is incorrectly re-using a port number that is still in use. The transcript would clarify which side was seeing the error.
