  Can I have more than one open connection at a time? I have one open now and sending a very large file that is taking hours but I need to send something to a different client right away using a different server. I'm afraid to test it lest my current connection drops.

  Yes, you can have multiple open connections without any interference between them; I do it all the time. Choose New Connection from the File menu to open a new connection.
