Are you sure that the OS X firewall is turned off? To check that, choose "System Preferences..." from the Apple menu, click on the Sharing icon, then on the Firewall tab. The button should say "Start" if the firewall is turned off.

    Thanks,

    Its off..

But i believe i'm going through to firewall..once here..and one at our provider

I know we have to turn off passive..to get in.

What questions could i ask..our IT about the firewall then..

You should ask your IT person about whether there's an FTP proxy server or SOCKS gateway that would let you do active (non-passive) FTP through your firewall. Most firewalls only allow passive FTP, but apparently that isn't an option for you (due to a firewall on the server side).

    Thanks,

Ok i'm having him look into that..

    Wouldn't this be a OSX error/bug then...if os9 works but OSX doesn't?

I'll let u know the results

That is curious, and is why I suspected the OS X firewall.

What's the output if you type

    sudo ipfw list

in Terminal (and enter the administrator password)?

Passive mode won't be blocked by a firewall on your side, but it sounds like the server you want to connect to has a firewall that will block it there. My guess is that passive mode will work for connections to other servers (like ftp.fetchsoftworks.com -- leave the User ID and Password fields blank).

    >>>What's the output if you type

    >>>sudo ipfw list

65535 allow ip from any to any

    Same Result!!!

ftp.fetchsoftworks.com Passive ON it connects OFF it doesn't get the dir

don't get this.. I tried from another OSX 10.2 computer d'l new fetch... and still the same..

    os9 opens
    osx closed (getting file list..)

Must be some properties at firewall startup

The ipfw output indicates that the problem isn't the ipfw firewall built into OS X. I'm sorry that I can't think of any other things to try; there's clearly a firewall somewhere that blocks OS X machines but not OS 9 ones.
