Not seeing updated files on server (6 posts)

I've been uploading new files to the server - but the pages were not updating.

Made sure I was uploading to the right place and I was, double check, yep I'm doing it right.

Refresh the list view, nothing, quit Fetch, quit Firefox, restarted computer everything and I'm still not seeing the new pages (yes, checked to be sure I really am uploading the new files)

Tried refreshing the file view on Fetch agian - still no joy. DELETED all my HTML files with Fetch, dumped the cache, looked at the site and the HTML pages are still loading!! The files according to Fetch are NOT on the server. Made sure to clear my cache again, and the files are live.

Went to the CP of the hosting company and low and behold the files I deleted with Fetch ARE still on the server...

What the heck is happening? Fetch is not refreshing the file list, I uploaded all the new files via the File Mananger in Host Control Panel and the pages with the new content are live. BUT I'm looking at the contents of the server right now in Fetch and the files that do appear on in the Host CP do not show up in Fetch even with refreshing, quiting, refreshing etc.

    I'm on a Mac 10.4.11

    Hi,

I apologize, because I know you said you're sure you are uploading to the right place, but if you delete all the webapges files you see in Fetch and yet you still see your webpage in a browser and the host control panel says the files are still on the server, then in Fetch you did not delete the files you thought you were deleting.

The most likely explanation is that despite appearances, you are looking at two different locations in Fetch and in the host control panel.

If you could provide us with some additional information, we'll try to sort out what is going on.

First, please tell us the address (URL) of your website.

    Then:

    * Quit Fetch, if it's running.
    * Open Fetch again.
    * Connect to your server.
    * Navigate to the folder that you think your webpage files should be appearing in, but is empty.
    * Go to the View menu, and choose Refresh.
    * Then choose Fetch Transcript from the Window menu, copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Hi,

The transcript show files in the "working" folder. Is the problem that you are not seeing any files listed in the Fetch file list for the "working" folder? That is, when you opened the transcript window, the Fetch file list was empty?

Or is it that you do see the files listed in the transcript, but you do not see an "html" folder listed in the file list?

I assume you're entering "mezzalunawellnesscenter.com/working" as the initial folder in the Fetch New Connection dialog.

What happens if you enter "www.mezzalunawellnesscenter.com/working" as the initial folder instead?

    Thanks,

There is a directry called HTML with all the .html files for the site. As you can see in the transcript the "html" directory is not even listed, but it IS on the server as evidenced by going to the site and seeing the live pages.

    Example:http://mezzalunawellnesscenter.com/working/html/services.html

as you can see the file is in a directory called "html". However the "html" directory is not showing up in Fetch.

I've tried to enter the site from mezzalunawellnesscenter.com - refreshing the lsit, going in to the "working" directory, refreshing the list and the html directoy still does not show up, nor do any "new" files that I put into any of the other directories -- if I add a new image to the gallery folder, it uploads, but I look on the page and the image is not there.

I know it sounds strange but if I can attache a screen grab I can show you the view from Fetch vs. the view from the hosting server file manager -- they are not the same...

If I enter - www.mezzalunawellnesscenter.com/working I get an error message that that folder or file does not exist. The directory on the server for the site is not public_html its mezzalunawellnesscenter.com

I've been uploading to this site for a couple weeks without a problem...but it almost like I'm looking at a backup server or something, I don't know..

    Hi,

Yes, I did see that "html" appears in pathname of your webpages... I'm just trying to figure where it's coming from and why it doesn't appear in what is apparently the same location in Fetch.

The transcript shows the raw file list sent to Fetch by the server - so if there is an "html" directory in the "working" directory, it's not that Fetch isn't showing it to you because of some issue in Fetch, it's because the server isn't even telling Fetch about it. Fetch can't list what the server doesn't tell it. It's very odd.

Thanks for trying connecting to the other folder; I didn't know if that would do anything other than give an error, but I wanted to make sure.

What happens if you do the following?

    * Connect to mezzalunawellnesscenter.com/working/ in Fetch.
    * In Fetch, go to the Go menu, and choose Go to Folder.
    * Enter "html" (without quotes) in the dialog that appears.

Does Fetch give an error, or does it take you to that directory?

I did notice that if you type just mezzalunawellnesscenter.com in a browser, you get a version of your home page, but that none of the links works. I also noticed that there are copies of a your files that are *not* in the working folder; for instance, if you go type mezzalunawellnesscenter.com/images into a browser, you will get a list of your images - all apparently uploaded today, no less, which makes me wonder if perhaps those are the ones you actually uploaded with the host control panel... but I can't explain why that's not the address they're displaying at.

Also, could you show me the list of files the transcript from shows when you go to the mezzalunawellnesscenter.com folder, instead of the working folder? I'd like to see the list of files and folders that appear in that folder.

(While I'm willing to continue looking into this, it's possible that if you contact your hosting provider, they may be able to help figure out what's going on quicker, if they have decent support.)

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire
