One site very slow (11 posts)

I'm connecting using Fetch to several FTP sites. I have to connect (ftp) to my own website using a non-standard port. It's a Redhat Linux server, and the nonstandard port is because it's a Mac. (I don't understand this, but never mind) This site is painfully slow, though other sites even on other continents are giving reasonable speed.

My normal connection is by satellite internet, through a high speed modem/ router. It works like a DSL or cable modem connection, with the router acting as a proxy server. I thought I had something wrong with this setup, so I tried a dialup connection instead. The problem site is still slower than any other by a factor of ten or more.

Are there any issues with Redhat Linux or non-standard ports? Or can anyone suggest something to try next? The webmaster is baffled too. He gets a good speed when he connects his windows box to that server.

    TIA

If this is the only site that you access at a non-standard port, and the other sites perform much better, I'd think that the issue is with the port number. Could you post a transcript from a session with the slow server?

    Thanks,

Thanks, here's a transcript. I got to the huge speed of 200 Bytes/second during this transfer. That's faster then most.

Do you have any better luck on a longer file? Satellite links have very high latency -- the amount of time between sending a command and hearing a response -- because of the time it takes the signal to travel 20,000iles into space and back.

Is there any possibility of connecting at the standard port number?

    Thanks,

OK, the system seems much faster today, but the slow site is still mush slower thatn everything else.

Here's a transcript of a session with two sites, slow one first, downloading similar sized files. I've had to blank stuff out of the second one as I'm under NDA. I used it as it's in another continent, it's a place I download from regularly, and it's consistently much faster than my home site.

I'm told I have to connect via the specified port as I'm on a Mac, and the security software (SafeTP) will reject me from port 21. The port I'm using bypasses that.

I'm not familiar with SafeTP -- does it run on your Mac, or on the server? There's no reason the server should be able to tell a Mac FTP client from a PC FTP client (this is a corrolary to the joke that on the Internet no one knows you're a dog :)).

    Thanks,

It's on the server. It's some sort of security software. I'll talk to the server admin guy and see if he can shed some light on it.

More about SafeTP - it has to run on the server and the client. There's no Mac version, so that's why I use a different port.

Gotcha. I'm sorry that I don't have any other suggestions to offer; this slowness may just be a problem with contacting that server at the non-standard port.
