Permission Denied for upload (8 posts)

    HI, I am trying to upload a folder with "tif" files in it to my client. I've never had problems before but, suddenly it's saying "permission denied". I have Fetch 5.5 and MAC OS 10.5.7

    Is there any way to resolve this??

    Hi,

    The "permissions denied" message comes from the server you're trying to upload the files to.

    Sometimes servers say "permission denied" when they don't like the name of one of the files or folders you're trying to upload. Do the folder or any of the files have spaces, extra periods (other than the one before "tif" at the end), or ampersands in them? If so, try renaming the folder or files to remove those, and upload again.

    Another thing to check is to make sure that there is enough space on the server to upload the files; sometimes servers that are out of space unhelpfully claim "permission denied."

    If neither of those suggestions help, we'd like to see a Fetch transcript, which may give us more information about why you're getting that error. Please do the following:

    * Quit Fetch.
    * Open Fetch again.
    * Connect to the server.
    * Try uploading again.
    * After you receive the error, go to the Window menu, and choose Fetch Transcript.
    * Copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

    We'll take a look and see if we have any advice.

    Thanks,

    Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly,

    I went through and looked at the folder and file names. Everything checks out. Here is a copy of the transcript... in the meantime, I am waiting to hear back about any space issues on their server.

    Thanks

    Hi,

    Thanks for the transcript. Based on that, it doesn't look like the problem is that you're out of space.

    It looks like either there's a problem with the server, causing it to give bogus "permission denied" errors, or that you need to be in a different folder on the server (many servers do not allow files to be uploaded to the "root" folder, which is what you appear to be looking at). Since there aren't any other folders listed, though, it might be that either they are missing (again, a problem with the server), or the only way to get to them is by entering something in the Initial folder field before connecting.

    Regardless, it looks like you need to talk to your client or the people who run their server and describe the problem to them - it looks like there's been some configuration change or problem on the server, and only they can sort it out.

    Please let us know if you have further questions after talking to them.

    Thanks,

    Hi Keith,

    The errors are coming from the server; Fetch is asking the server to put a file in the "laughinggoatstudio.com" and the server is saying "you can't do that." So it's out of Fetch's control; the question is why the server is giving you an error.

    Have you uploaded files to the "laughinggoatstudio.com" folder successfully before? Or did you just create it, and are now trying to upload to it?

    If you just created it and are trying to upload to it, my guess is the server may be giving you errors because it doesn't like periods in the names of folders. You should try renaming the folder and see if that fixes the problem. (Unfortunately, it's possible the server will give you an error when you try to rename it as well.)

    If that's not the case - you've uploaded to this folder successfully in the past - then there's some problem with the server, and you should contact the folks who run the server and ask them to look into why you're getting permissions errors when you try to upload to it now.

    Please let us know if you have further questions.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    The solution is to right click on the file in Fetch, click on Get Info, then select the "write" permission boxes. That's it. Jack
