Port numbers being ignored (13 posts)

    Hi,

    I'm trying to connect to a client's webserver and fetch appears to be ignoring the port number I've placed in the port field. At first I thought I'd been given the wrong information but the same connection details work via dreamweaver and firezilla. What could be causing this?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

    Fetch should not ignore the port number, regardless of what kind of server you're connecting to.

    We'd like some more information to help diagnose the problem. Could you tell us which port number you are trying to connect to?

    And then please do the following:

    * Quit Fetch.
    * Open Fetch again.
    * Enter the connection information, including the port number.
    * Try connecting to the server.
    * After you receive an error (or end up in the wrong place), go to the Window menu, and choose Fetch Transcript.
    * Copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

    We'll take a look and see if we can figure out what's going on.

    Thanks,

    Hi Scott,

    Thanks for your response. The port number I've been given is 50004. Here's the transcript as requested:

    Hi Lisa,

    Thanks for the transcript. It shows that Fetch is successfully connecting to port 50004 exactly as requested (the line "Connected to 62.128.157.47 port 50004" confirms that).

    What exactly is the problem you're experiencing?

    Thanks,

    It's not connecting to the correct folder. I thought it was the login details at first but when I asked my client they are correct only they're taking them to a different file list. They've tried it on firezilla, ws_ftp and dreamweaver and all connect to a different place to the one that my fetch is connecting to.

    Just to add to this I've just done a test myself in DW and it connects to the place it's supposed to. In fetch, even though it's saying it's connected to port 50004, it looks like the file structure when I connect to 50001.

    Hi Lisa,

    Hmm. I can't immediately say why they are seeing a different file list than you are, at least, not without seeing a transcript from them.

    If you are all entering exactly the same connection information, there is no reason Fetch should be showing you something different from the other FTP clients - because once you connect to the server, it's up to the server to decide what folder to take you to based on the connection information you entered.

    One option would be to ask them what folder/path you should be looking at, and enter that in Fetch's initial folder field in the New Connection dialog (just above the Port number).

    Another option would be to ask them for a transcript of their connection attempt, and then you send that to me, and I will take a look and see if I can figure out what the difference might be.

    Would trying either of those be possible?

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Hi Lisa,

    Okay, given that, would it be possible for you to send us the transcript from Dreamweaver? Here's how to find it:

    * In Dreamweaver, go to the Site menu, choose Advanced, and choose FTP Log.
    * An FTP Log window should open somewhere on your screen. (In my version of Dreamweaver, it opens at the bottom of the screen in a very narrow window).
    * Select the contents of the log window (clicking in the log window, and typing Command-A selected them all for me), copy them to the clipboard, and paste them in a reply to this message.

    Thanks,

    If you still think getting logs from any of the other programs I mentioned above would be helpful let me know and I'll ask my client for them.

    Hi Lisa,

    Thanks for the Dreamweaver transcript.

    No, I don't think we need the transcripts from the other programs at this time.

    Could you please try the following?

    * Open Fetch.
    * Close any open file list windows.
    * Go to the Fetch menus and choose Preferences.
    * Click the Miscellaneous tab.
    * Check the "Ignore file list cache" checkbox.
    * Close the Preferences window.
    * Connect to the server.

    Does that fix the problem?

    Thanks,
