Problem with MS Office files. (11 posts)

    Howdy.

    We are having some issues with Fetch 5.0.5 / 5.5 and Office .docx/.xls/.xlsx. When downloading with Fetch, the file transfers just fine, but upon opening, we get a prompt for conversion (text, html etc...). Both Word and Excel files behave the same. We get this issue on Mac OS 10.4.X and 10.5.X platforms. We are running Office 2004 (the most current update with the XML conversion update).

    After reading Scott's excellent advice about automatic decoding, I have disabled this feature in Preferences. However, this has not solved the problem. We do not have this problem with Filezilla, but I would prefer to keep using Fetch.

    Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Adam,

    From your description, I'm not sure this is the problem that can be solved by disabling automatic decoding (and that shouldn't be necessary with Fetch 5.5, which fixes the problem that caused Office 2008 documents to get decompressed).

    So we'd like some more information to help figure out what's going on, so we can help fix it.

    If I understand you correctly, the file appears to download okay - it does not turn into a folder after downloading - but when you double-click on it to open it in Word or Excel, you get a prompt asking you what format the file is in?

    And could you please do the following, preferably with Fetch 5.5?

    * Quit Fetch.
    * Open Fetch again.
    * Connect to your server.
    * Download one of the problem .docx files.
    * After the file has successfully downloaded, go to the Window menu, and choose Fetch Transcript.
    * Copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Hi Adam,

    Thanks for the transcript. According to it, Fetch is downloading the file in the correct format; so the problem is not that Fetch is mangling the file on download. (Which is good.)

    Could you please do the following?

    * Connect to the server with Fetch.
    * Select a .docx file.
    * Click the Get Info button.
    * In the info window, click the disclosure triangle next to the Transfer Options label at the bottom of the info window to display the Transfer Options pane, if it's not already displayed.
    * In the Transfer Options section, look at the "Open files like this with" menu.
    * Which application is listed there?

    Thanks,

    Hi Adam,

    I installed Office 2004, updated it to the latest version, and installed the OpenXMLConverter 1.0.3 on one of our Macs to help me understand the problem better (and to try to duplicate it).

    Here is what I experience:

    * I download a .docx file with Fetch.
    * I double-click on it.
    * Word 2004 opens, and asks me, "This document was created in a newer version of Micosoft Office. Do you want to convert it?"
    * I click the Convert button; the file opens in Microsoft Word 2004.

    This is exactly the same behavior I experience if I create a Word 2008 document on another Mac and copy it to the Mac with Office 2004 via USB thumbdrive, instead of downloading it with Fetch.

    How does what you experience when you download a .docx using Fetch differ from this? And how does what you experience with FileZilla compare to this?

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Scott,

    When I open the file downloaded with Fetch, I get a prompt window that asks to convert the file using the following formats: text, MSDOS text, HTML etc. I do not get the normal convert file prompt. The exact same file downloaded with Filezilla behaves as you described it should.

    I am using the 1.02 XML converter available from the Microsoft site.

    Hi Adam,

    Thanks for the clarification.

    I'd like to see examine one of the downloaded files to see if I can figure out why Word is treating it differently (and hopefully, from that, what Fetch may have done differently than FileZilla).

    Could you please do the following?

    * Download one of the problem .docx files through Fetch.
    * Select the downloaded file in the Finder.
    * Go to the File menu, and choose either Compress (10.5) or Create Archive) (10.4) to create a zip archive of that file.
    * Email the zip archive to us at: bugs at fetchsoftworks dot com

    Thanks,

    Hi Adam,

    I received the .docx file you emailed us, and I sent a reply Tuesday evening - since I hadn't heard back from you, I wanted to follow up here and make sure you received my emailed reply?

    If not, let me know.

    Thanks,

    Scott,

    I am sorry to leave this for so long. I am looking through my email and am not sure where we left off. I am still not able to open .docx files downloaded though Fetch. However, I have updated one of my Macs to the most recent version of Office (12.2.0) and have not had any issues. I think that the reason we are having this issue is related to Office V.x. I am pursuing this more.

    Again, I apologize for thread necromancy.

    Hi Adam,

    Here's where we left off. I did some testing with the file you sent me, and the only time I saw the dialog asking me to choose a format for converting the file was on Macs where I had Office v.X (the version of Office that came before Office 2004) installed as well as Office 2004.

    On Macs with only Office 2004 or later installed, I did not see the conversion prompt - .docx files opened directly in Word, as expected.

    So I'm pretty sure this problem only happens on Macs that either only have Office v.X installed on them, or have both Office v.X and Office 2004 installed.

    The problem isn't really with Fetch; the OpenXMLConverter is not meant to work with Office v.X as far as I understand it; it is only for Office 2004, but having Office v.X installed as well confuses things, because the Mac is trying to open the downloaded .docx files in Office v.X.

    One solution would be to uninstall Office v.X from the Macs having the problem.

    However, I think doing the following steps will also work, assuming you also have Office 2004 installed. They tell Fetch to tell your Mac to open the downloaded files in Office 2004, not Office v.X. You should do these even though .docx files already say they will open with Microsoft Word.

    * Connect to the server with Fetch.
    * Select a .docx file.
    * Click the Get Info button.
    * In the info window, click the disclosure triangle next to the Transfer Options label at the bottom of the info window to display the Transfer Options pane, if it's not already displayed.
    * In the Transfer Options section, click the "Open files like this with" menu.
    * Choose "Other".
    * In the dialog that appears, find and choose Microsoft Word from Office 2004 (this is the important part).
    * Download a .docx file and double-click on it and see if the right thing happens.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire
