We get the "FTP server dropped the connection message" when attempting to log on to an outside server - from any Mac on our network. A Mac in another city can login in readily. Is it our firewall or something on their end?

Here's transcript after a couple attempts:

Fetch 5.2 (5C121) PowerPC running on Mac OS X 10.4.9 (8S165) PowerPC English
StuffIt Engine 0x820, StuffIt SDK Version 10.1.1b1
    Partial serial FETCH5X020-F6YJ-BJUP T
Connecting to ftp.aps.vertisinc.com port 21 (Mac OS X firewall is off) (7/31/08 11:31:24 AM)
    Connected to 65.247.174.16 port 21 (7/31/08 11:31:24 AM)
Connecting to ftp.aps.vertisinc.com port 21 (Mac OS X firewall is off) (7/31/08 11:32:21 AM)
    Connected to 65.247.174.16 port 21 (7/31/08 11:32:21 AM)

    TIA!

You might try connecting to ftp.fetchsoftworks.com (leave the Username and Password fields blank). If that does not work, it looks like a firewall problem on your network.

    Thanks,

That works fine, as well as all of our other ftp addresses...

That's odd. So the problem appears to be specific to the combination of your network and that server (I'm able to connect to ftp.aps.vertisinc.com, at least enough to get a bad password error). I would talk to your network administrator or Internet Service Provider.

    Thanks,

Thanks - if the solution is anything noteworthy, I'll send it along -
