Setting Permissions (4 posts)

i'd like to know when Fetch is going to bing back the days that one could set Permissions without using GetInfo?

In version 4, setting permissions was a 1 sec operation. Now, with the GetInfo way of doing it.. setting permissions takes forever...

i have looked through all of the help, but can not find anything that will make Fetch simply set permissions on a folder without retrieving all of the info on the sub structure and thusly taking 10inutes on a single folder that has multiple subfolders and files that needn't be analyzed.

Please fix this OR point me to a way to set permissions on folders without this unnecessary process.

    Hi,

If you hold down the Option key while clicking the Get Info button (or hold down the Option key while choosing Get Info from the menu, or press Command-Option-I), Fetch will open the info window without calculating the size of the folder, in other words, it will open the info window immediately without examining the folder contents. Please let us know if this does not do what you want.

And we have noted your feedback that you would like a direct set permissions command.

    Thanks,

wow.. that's perfect. i do think that there should be a more evident way of directly setting permissions in the next version of fetch.

put it in the preferences or in the menus

i have now re-skimmed the HELP for this and found that it is referred to as "Get Quick Info". and "Get Quick Info" not referred to a single time when looking at the "Concepts>Permissions" page of HELP - the 'option-key' method is mentioned.. but in a single sentence that one could easily miss - it needs to have that "Get Quick Info" bold blue hyperlink in there to call attention to it. i would guess that anyone wanting to set Permissions would 99% of the time would want to use "Get Quick Info" and not "Get Info" considering the nature of the operation is to simply set permissions and not to find out every detail on a folder or file.

I would like it in the Preferences to be able to swap the the apple-i shortcut to be "Get Quick Info" and the option-apple-i to be "Get Info". that would be sweet:)

I will suggest a quick fix to this would be a small update to the HELP manual and release this in the next Fetch update.

    thanks for the fast feedback!!

    Hi,

    You're welcome.

And thanks for the feedback on the help; I will definitely review it for the next Fetch release and see about making the mention of how to do Quick Get Info more prominent.

I will pass along your feedback for a preference to swap what the command key does as well, although I cannot promise any changes in that regard for the next version.

    Thanks,
