    Hi,

Does anyone know how to show hidden files in Fetch 5.3.1?

    Thanks,
    Mark

    Hi Mark,

What do you mean by "hidden files?" Do you mean files beginning with a period, or something else?

And are you trying to show these files on the server, or are you trying to see them in the Put dialog so you can upload them?

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Mark -

Can you share with us how you did it?

    Hi Michael,

If you can tell us what you're trying to do (see the questions I asked Mark above), we'll be happy to give advice about what to do in Fetch.

    Thanks,

    Scott -

My guy at the ISP that hosts my website said "Well, it's a hidden file so you have to turn that on in your ftp
client so you can see them." I am looking for a file that doesn't appear in my FTP window when I log on. I need to get the file, change it and then re-upload it so as he said there must be a setting in the preferences to see this hidden file but I can't figure it out. Also, I just upgraded top the latest version of Fetch to see if that helped - nothing changed.

    Hi Michael,

Does the "hidden" file's name begin with a period or not?

    Give the following a try:

    * Go to the Fetch menu, and choose Preferences.
    * Click the Miscellaneous tab.
    * Make sure the "Omit filenames beginning with a period" checkbox is unchecked.
    * Make sure the "Use LIST -al command to reveal hidden files" checkbox is checked.
    * Open a connection to your server, and go to the folder where the file is supposed to be.
    * Go to the View menu, and choose Refresh.

Let us know if that helps or not.

    Thanks,

Hi, I'm trying this same thing (looking for .htaccess for a wordpress site) and I've made sure the "Omite files..." is unchecked and the "LIST -al" is checked. Refreshed, and still nothing. Any ideas?

    Hi Brian,

Could you post the contents of the Fetch Transcript window (choose Fetch Transcript from the Window menu) after you refresh? That should show what the server is sending to Fetch.

    Thanks,

htaccess shows in the file list - except on my GoDaddy hosting which is Linux. I don't know what the other clients' hosting are (Win/Lin).

htaccess did show before I upgraded to 5.7.1, and Fetch Transcript matches the file list.

Disregard my post above. The file was accidently moved to a subfolder...which brings up the question... what about a Search Terminal (with grep) for Fetch?

Do you want to search the names of files, or search their contents?

Files firstly to find the missing file... this may have occurred using voice commands with Dragon Dictate on while a video was playing in the background ... how does one search, quickly, 50+ folders to see if htaccess was dropped into it... (site map generator, pdf, which one could search?)

Unfortunately most servers don't provide a way for an FTP client to perform such a search. But we'd very much like to provide such a feature.

    Hello,
I am also having trouble locating my .htaccess file for wordpress. I have gone through the settings mentioned above but still no luck.
When I did a search of the fetch transcript i did not find .htaccess which makes me assume it's not there, but when I am trying to change my permalink structure it just tells me i just need to update my file which makes me assume that wordpress is seeing it somewhere?
Anywho, here is my transcript.... I'm pretty new to this wordpress thing, so forgive my ignorance and thanks for any help provided!

    Hi,

You mentioned that you'd tried the settings mentioned above, but it looks (from the transcript) as if the "Use 'LIST -al' command to reveal hidden files" box is unchecked. I would definitely try with that checked.

If that does not help, you might try holding down the Shift key and choosing "Edit Other…" from the Remote menu. You'll be prompted for the name of the file you want to edit, and you can enter ".htaccess" (without the quotes).

    Thanks,

    Thanks Jim,
I got it figured out. All I had to do was enable 777 permissions to my main folder to allow wordpress to create the .htaccess file and allow the permalink change, and then of course revert to the original permissions. Simple fix, but a hell of an answer to find!

    Thanks again,
    Jimbo

    Hey Franz,
Depending on your FTP software will determine your process for changing file permissions. Just google for the answer on how to do that if you are having trouble. Change permissions for the main folder that stores all your Wordpress stuff and then try and change the permalink settings on your Wordpress dashboard. This should auto create a .htaccess file for you....
Sure you could just create your own .htaccess file, but that is a pain if you don't know what you are doing. Believe me, I tried. Just change permissions and Wordpress will do it for you, at least in my experience.
    Good luck
