I have been trying to download some large files from my Mac (OS X 10.2.6) at work recently, and find that every file has seemingly finished the transfer, but Fetch never quite finishes. The files are typically about 100MB and downloaded via an ADSL connection. (I have not had any problems with files of up to a few magabytes.)

I note that there is an FAQ that says:

    3. The progress bar fills the entire circle, but the transfer never finishes.

If that is not the problem our recommendations are to: 1) Try checking the "Use passive mode transfers (PASV)" box in the Firewall section of Preferences; 2) Try a different FTP client (such as Interarchy, NetFinder or Vicom FTP Client) to check whether the problem is specific to Fetch or more general; 3) Make sure your modem firmware or network card drivers are up to date; 4) Contact the server administrator or network administrator, and see if they can reproduce the problem under similar conditions.

Fetch is usng passive mode. I have not tried other FTP clients yet. Ethernet drivers are up to date. I am the server administrator and it is standard Mac OS X 10.2.6.

If I Click the STOP button, then Fetch sits with the watch cursor for 5-10 minutes, but eventually stops, showing as "Disconnected". If I then Resume the transfer, it completes immediately. (Until this happens, the icon is wrong.)

Here is a bit of the transcript:

Thanks for the report. The problem is that the server sends the whole file but does not tell Fetch that it's done; so Fetch spins its wheels waiting for an "I'm all done" message that never appears. I will see if I can improve on Fetch's handling of this situation, but in the meantime using Resume Download is the best way to finish the transfer.

    Thanks,

    Jim Matthews

I have now tried copying the same files using command line ftp in Terminal. It seems to finish normally.

I'd be interested in investigating this further, to find out what the command line ftp client is doing differently than Fetch. If you'd like to help please send a note to bugs @ fetchsoftworks.com (removing those extra spaces).

    Thanks,
