    My hosting is with Fasthosts UK, and whilst I have uploaded my index page ok, my photos upload but don't appear on the wbsite. I have refreshed constantly but they are not there. I even had one returned anonymously to me by emailsome time ago so they are going somewhere! Should the photos be put seperately or in a file in hdocs?

    Hi,

    We'd like some more information in order to help figure out the problem.

    What program are you using to create your website?

    What format are your photos in?

    Does Fetch say it's uploading your photos when you put them with the Put command, or do you get an error?

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Thanks for your prompt response.
    I run Mac OS 10.2.8.
    I use Nvu as an editor, save to file, then select the file when prompted by Fetch when I 'Put'
    The photos are .jpeg,and no error message is shown; they are slowly uploaded by Fetch and then 'completed' but do not appear on my website.I suspect I may not be doing something right !
    Thank you.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the additional details. Could you provide us with a few more?

    Could you tell us the address (URL) of your website (with the working index page, but no photos)?

    And could you please do the following?

    * Quit Fetch, if it's running.
    * Open Fetch again.
    * Connect to your server.
    * Change to the folder on the server you have been uploading the photos to (if you have been changing folders before uploading; if not, skip this step).
    * Then choose Fetch Transcript from the Window menu, copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Hello again
    Just a further thought - my Hosting Plan is a Windows package. Will that make any difference? I was advised not to go for the Linux package as this may be difficult for Windows computers to read .

    Hi Zoe,

    No, the fact that you have a Windows hosting package shouldn't be a problem. Fetch works fine with Windows-based servers.

    The problem appears to be that the webpage is looking for the photos in one location, but the photos are actually in another location. It's looking for them in a folder location that is only meaningful on your Macintosh, but when you upload them to the server, they are going into the same folder as the index.html page.

    Generally, for webpages to display correctly, files and photos must be in the same relative locations on the Macintosh as they are on the server. That is, if they're in the same folder on the Mac, they need to be in the same folder on the server; or if photos are in a folder that is inside the folder holding your index.html page, they need to be inside a folder on the server, too.

    I am not familiar with Nvu, so I cannot give you exact instructions of what to do, but I will try to give some guidance.

    It looks like most, but not all, of your images are in a folder on your Macintosh called "web images," which is inside a folder named "WEB II", which is inside "WEB", inside your Documents folder. I do not know if you set that up, or if Nvu set that folder up.

    However, I believe that your index.hmtl page is in a different folder on your Macintosh, is that correct?

    If possible, what you should try to do is move all the files and photos that make up your website into the same folder. (If you had a large website, you might not want to put everything in the same folder, but your site is relatively small.)

    This may make the photos not show up in Nvu, but then you should relink the photos in Nvu so that everything displays correctly in it.

    Then once you have fixed everything, you should upload all the files to the htdocs folder on the server.

    Let us know if this makes sense, and helps, or if you have further questions.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire
