I have a 10-year old (working)Mac, a PowerMac clone with SYstem 7.5. It has an ethernet port, but no USB port. Can I use Fetch to FTP data to a PC? I was thinking of connecting the two computers with a cross-wire cable. If so, i. which version of Fetch do I use, and how do I obtain it? ii. what network settings do I use for the Mac? Thanks.

    Hi Neil,

Yes, possibly you could use Fetch to do that if you had a crossover cable and the correct network settings, but I'm afraid we can only give general advice - it's been a long time since any of us ran System 7.5.

Fetch 4.0.3, available from our downloads page, will run on System 7.5.

Since Fetch is only an FTP client, the PC would have to be running an FTP server in order to transfer files to it. We don't have recommendations on FTP server software for Windows.

I'm not sure what network settings you would need to use on the Mac. However, you might want to take a look at this webpage:

    http://www.atpm.com/7.11/networking1.shtml

It has advice on how to do what you are hoping to do, including the network settings to use (although it appears to be assuming you have Mac OS 9; but see the comment #4 at the bottom for some stuff about 7.5).

Sorry not to have more specific advice for you, and good luck.

    Thanks,
