Hello! Fetch has been recommended to me for web page publishing. I have been using Microsoft FrontPage for Mac but, since upgrades are not available, problems have arisen. Anyway, I have downloaded the Fetch file but cannot get it to open because the ''application which created it is not available.'' Is the 15-day free trial still available and how do I access it? Many thanks from Canada.

    Hi,

Sorry you're having trouble opening Fetch. We'd like a little more information to help figure out what's going on.

What version of Mac OS are you running?

After you download Fetch, are you having trouble opening the first file that is downloaded, or do you see a background that says "Fetch 5" on it, and you're having a problem with the files you see there?

    Thanks,

Thank you for your reply, Scott.

When I downloaded from the download link, a small icon like the word doc with a turned down corner appeared on my desktop. Clicking that produced the message I have mentioned. I found the Fetch folder had been automically inserted into my Applications folder and when I clicked on the Fetch icon, a second message reading ''This trial version of Fetch 4.01expired 14/2/02. To enter . . .serial number . . .etc'' This was followed by four buttons: Quit, (shodowed) Next time, Enter Serial and Purchase.

My computer is an Apple iMac 9.2.

I am completely unfamiliar with Fetch but my server has recommended it so am hoping you can help me.

    Ciao for now

    Hi,

There are a couple of different things going on here.

First, it sounds like you are downloading Fetch 5, which doesn't work on Mac OS 9, and so it isn't distributed in a format that Mac OS 9 can open - that's why you get the "application which created it is not available" message.

I believe the copy of Fetch 4.0.1 in your Applications folder was not actually installed today, but was installed and run 4 years ago, based on the expiration date it lists.

You should download a new copy of Fetch 4.0.3, which works on Mac OS 9, from http://fetchsoftworks.com/downloads.html - be sure to use the "Fetch 4.0.3 for Mac OS 9" link.

Unfortunately, since Fetch was run on your computer 4 years ago, Fetch 4.0.3 will continue to say that the 15 day trial period has expired.

However, you can still try Fetch if you leave the expiration message on the screen until it lets you press the Next Time button, but that will take a while - one second for every day since the trial period expired, so probably 20-30 minutes. Or, if you have access to another Macintosh that hasn't had Fetch installed, you could download a copy of Fetch on it, and try it there without waiting.

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

    Thanks,

Many thanks for you patience, Scott.

The download I chose for my Apple iMac OS 9.2 is this:
    Fetch 4.0.3 for Mac OS 9, Mac OS 8, System 7 (1.2MB

I will now attempt success using your advice to disregard the expiration and bide my time whilst Next Time kicks in.

    P.S.

I have never used Fetch before so what is in my application folder is what came up at this time.

I cannot even figure out why it is in there since, as a rule, downloads appear on my desktop.

    Hello, again, Scott!

I managed to succeed this time. Thank you Thank you

Only the window popped up asking me for User ID and Password so I filled out those thinking it was by way of a registration.

Of course, the password was rejected. Pray tell, what do I do now?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi,

I think you're asking about the Fetch New Connection dialog, which asks for hostname, user ID, and password.

In the hostname field you enter the name of the server you want to connect to, to upload your webpages. You most likely have an account on the server, and that account has a username (user ID) and password associated with it, and you must enter those in order to be given access to change your webpages (it's like a ATM card and PIN code give you permission to access your bank account).

You should enter the same hostname, user ID and password that you used in FrontPage to upload your webpages. If you don't know what those are, you should contact your server owner and they can help you.

    Thanks,

Thanks again, Scott. The 4.0.3 just would not download. I have printed out the ''help'' materiel in the 4.0.1 and will work from that. By the way, it does, indeed, take a good 30 minutes to take me to the ''next time'' button. My server is my cable company and I am sure they will help me with the appropriate info since they are the ones who referred me to Fetch.
By the way, I have found the posters' comments here and your administrators' replies very informative.
    Ciao for now.

    Hi,

I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were still having a problem downloading Fetch 4.0.3. It sounds like you are clicking on the correct link. This should download a file named "Fetch.sit," which is a StuffIt file. If you have StuffIt Expander installed on your system, you should be able to open it. If the file is not named "Fetch.sit" you may want to double-check that clicked the correct link.

Please let us know if you have any further questions,
