An "Open Files Like This With" problem (5 posts)

I'm running the trial version of Fetch 5.0 on a PowerMac G5 1.8 GHz with Mac OS 10.4.1.

Whenever I download a header file (e.g., test.h), the file opens with Xcode. I'd like it to open with BBEdit.

I've tried doing a "Get Info" on "test.h" in Fetch and changing the "Open files like this with" and "Edit files like this with" popups to BBEdit, but this doesn't seem to help. The popup menus change to "BBEdit", but the icon remains that of a header file for Xcode and the file continues to open in Xcode when I download it (by dragging to my desktop) and double-clicking it. However, if I click the "Edit" button in Fetch, the file does open in BBEdit.

    Can you help?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

If you set a .h file to open with BBEdit, close the info window, and then Get Info on the .h file again, does Fetch show XCode or BBEdit in the "Open files like this with" pop-up? In other words, does the setting stick at all?

Also, could you please stuff or Finder archive one of your .h files *after* you download it with Fetch and send it to us at bugs at fetchsoftworks.com so we can investigate further?

    Thanks,

    Thanks for replying Scott.

Yes, when I change the "Open Files Like This With" popup in Fetch from Xcode to BBEdit, it does stick. That is, Fetch continues to show BBEdit as the selected item in the popup for header files. But the icon doesn't change from the Xcode icon to the BBEdit icon and when I download the file it continues to open in Xcode. I have the same problem with other extensions (e.g., I can change .html files to open with BBEdit instead of Safari, but the icon doesn't change and they still open with Safari).

I've also tried pulling all the Fetch related files from my Library/Preferences folder and letting Fetch create them again. This doesn't seem to help.

I just sent an email to bugs@fetchsoftworks.com with a Finder archive of a header file I downloaded via Fetch. The subject of the email is the same as the Topic of this post.

    Thanks!

This problem is fixed in Fetch 5.0.1.

You can download Fetch 5.0.1 from the home page of the Fetch Softworks website:
