Automatic would be appropriate as long as the file you uploaded was of type TEXT or had a file name suffix (like .pl) listed in Suffix Mappings as indicating a text file. If neither of those things is true you have to choose Text format rather than Automatic.

I'm not that familiar with ftp protocols, and wondering what happened when I uploaded a modified cgi file and the program it belonges with stopped working. The developers went to the site and fixed the problem. When i asked what they had found (so I wouldn't repeat a mistake), they said it most likely was not uploaded in ASCII mode.
I thought the automatic setting would be appropriate..but now not so sure...
I have MAC OS9.1 / fetch 4.0
