automator - copy url to clipboard after upload? (11 posts)

    I've got an automator workflow that zips up some files and uploads them to my ftp destination via fetch. Once the upload is complete, I'd like to have the url copied to my clipboard to easily plant into an email - is this possible? Thanks!

    Yes, you can do that by adding two actions to your workflow (after the Upload Files action):

    1) Generate Fetch Item Report. Check the "URL" checkbox, uncheck the "Name" checkbox, and uncheck "Include field names"
    2) Copy to Clipboard

    If you like you could use the New Mail Message action instead of Copy to Clipboard in order to start composing the email message.

    Thanks,

    Thanks Jim - I'm plugging in your specifics, but I get an alert that "the action 'Generate Fetch Item Report' encountered an error". Any ideas?

    I'd be happy to help troubleshoot. Some questions:

    * Is there an error code in the error message?
    * What version of Fetch is installed?
    * What version of Mac OS X are you running?
    * What action comes immediately before Generate Fetch Item Report?

    Thanks,

    Thanks Jim -

    * No error code
    * Fetch 5.6
    * OS 9.7
    * Just kidding. 10.6.8
    * Immediately before is a Fetch action to Upload Files

    Appreciate the help!

    Do you see any more error information if you choose "Log" from the View menu?

    No, sorry, nothing in the log...

    Try replacing the Generate Fetch Item Report action with the View Results action. Do you still get an error? What do you see?

    I got no error, but nothing else, either - sort of like it skipped it, or there was nothing to "view" as far as I was concerned. Nor did it copy anything to the clipboard - well, except several lines of chinese character gibberish.

    That's odd. I would recommend rebooting and starting with a fresh Automator workflow, to see if that changes anything.

    If it doesn't, the next thing I'd do is run the Console application (it's found in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder) and watch it while running your workflow -- is there any interesting output there?

    Thanks,
