Cannot upload file ("put") but can download files (9 posts)

    I have 60MB of space and only 20MB being used on my web server. I can download files from the site but cannot upload anything. I'm getting a "Fetch could not put (filename) because the FTP server has shut down. Try again, or contact the server administrator to verify that the server is running. Server responded: "No Transfer Timeout (300 seconds): closing control connection" I've tried checking and unchecking "Use passive mode transfers (PASV) but still no success. I've tried going directly through the Fujitsu modem and through the Linksys router, neither fixes the issue. We use Verizon DSL. Fetch Verson 5.2.1 on a Mac running OS 10.4.9. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks! ~Lisa

    PS I've used Fetch exclusively to FTP files and it has worked perfectly in the past!

    Hi Lisa,

    We're sorry to hear you're having trouble with Fetch. Are you having uploading problems to just this one server, or to every server? (If you ever upload to more than one.)

    Could you please do the following?

    * Quit Fetch, if it's running.
    * Open Fetch again.
    * Make sure the "Use passive mode transfers" checkbox is checked.
    * Connect to your server.
    * Try uploading again.
    * Then choose Fetch Transcript from the Window menu, copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    It looks like this is a Verizon issue and NOT a Fetch issue, My online account page says that I have no more space but I'm only using 19MB of 60MB, so I suspect it is a server issue on their end. I have contacted Verizon DSL's VERY inept tech support folks (after being hung up on 9 times) and they said that that they have a ticket in on the problem and that they would transfer me to the Web Space department but that the issue should be fixed within 24hours. Then I get disconnected and never make it to the Web Space department. Thanks for all the GREAT, timely help on this board!

    Hi Scott
    Well, I'm back! I've spent hours on the phone with the Verizon tech support and they said that they are looking ito the issue and that is should be resolved within 24 hours. I've tried FTPing a small file but it does not work. I can download a file and delete files on the server though. Here is the Fetch Transcript for when I try to upload. Do you see something here that I can fix?

    Hi Lisa,

    No, I'm sorry, I don't think there's anything you can do. Most likely it's a server problem.

    Have you been able to upload to this server successfully with Fetch in the past?

    However, one thing you can try to make sure it's not something with your Mac or router is to see if you can successfully upload to the Fetch server; that will help isolate the problem. To do this:

    * Connect to ftp.fetchsoftworks.com (leave the username and password blank).
    * Upload a small file by dragging it to the "incoming" folder. The incoming folder is a dropbox - you can put files in it, but you can't see them afterwards.
    * Let us know if you get an error, or if the upload succeeds.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Hi Scott
    Yes Fetch has worked perfectly in the past and yes I can upload to the incoming folder on the Fetch server no problem. I thought it was a problem with Verizon's server but they seem to have the "Department of no help what-so-ever" going on for Tech Support. I have explained the problem exists with the Verizon web server that our account is on, I have been on the phone with them for something like 4 hours total now (1 hour and 20 minutes on Sunday alone) and they say they have 2 tickets in on the issue, but I doubt they still understand that it's their problem. We may just have to switch providers because of this. Oh well! This is making me crazyyyyy Thanks for the help and I can now tell them that I can FTP to other servers just not theirs. ~Lisa

    Hi Lisa,

    Yes, now we know it's not a problem with your router or Fetch.

    My only further suggestion is to double-check and make sure it's not an out of space problem, even though you believe that you have plenty of space. If you can find a reasonable size file to delete from the server (that you don't need to upload again right away), and then try uploading a small file, I would try that just to make sure.

    Good luck,

    Scott McGuire
