    Hi,

Since the problem started happening, have you tried to upload a different file, to make sure it's not a problem with that particular file? (This is unlikely, but worth checking.)

The other thing I'd check is to make sure you aren't out of space to store files on the server. Unfortunately most FTP servers don't give a useful error when this happens. The fact that you were able to upload several files successfully, and then one of the files failed, and continues fails when you retry, suggests this might be the problem.

You should try deleting unused files from the server, if possible, and see if that fixes the problem.

Please let us know what the results of trying these two suggestions are.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Hi Scott,

The files that are being uploaded are all .jpg files, and we attempted to transfer several different sets of images and the problem continued to occur on different images each time we tried.

I have checked the available space on the server; there is plenty of room.

One thing that I do know is that the server does not like Passive transfers, and it seems that fetch is attempting to switch to passive transfer mode in the middle of the transfer? That is when the error occurs.

We do have the passive transfers option disabled in Fetch, but for some reason Fetch continues to want to use it.

Any additional help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

If I understand correctly, if you start with a new batch of files, you can upload a few, but then it starts failing again? It's not that the server now refuses all files?

When a transfer fails, Fetch automatically switches from active to passive (or vice versa) to see if it can succeed using the other mode. (In our experience, this is almost always a feature that helps users.) The passive transfers preference in Fetch indicates which mode you want Fetch to try first; it does not guarantee Fetch will stick with that mode. However, if there are no problems, Fetch should stick with that mode. But from your transcript, it does look like Fetch is switching to passive mode before the failure occurs, which would be odd.

There is a hidden preference to turn off the automatic switching. Here's what to do:

    * Quit Fetch.
    * Open the Terminal application (in the Utilities folder inside your Applications folder).
    * At the command line prompt, type:

defaults write com.fetchsoftworks.Fetch UseDataConnectionMagic -bool false

(you may want to copy and paste that line to avoid typos).

Then open Fetch and try transferring, and Fetch will stick with the mode (passive or not) indicated by the preference.

Please give it a try and let us know if it fixes the problem or not.

    Thanks,

    Hi Scott,

That seems to have done the trick. Thank you.

    Hi Kent,

You're welcome, I'm glad to hear that worked.

We'll look into why Fetch decided to switch to passive mode for you.

    Thanks,

    Hi Kent,

I'm a colleague of Scott's, and I'd like to gather more information about the problem you were seeing before you set that secret preference. Would you be willing to run a special version of Fetch to gather some more information? If so, please send an email to bugs at fetchsoftworks dot com.

    Thanks!
