    I am trying to set the permissions of some .cgi files (CHMOD 755) in a directory on my server. But when I try I get an error message from my FTP client saying

    "Server response: SITE option not supported"

    Why is it doing this.. is this something to do with my host's setup rather than fetch?

    Yes, the server does not support changing file permissions through FTP. You'll have to ask your server administrator for an alternative method.
