As the subject line says, the default shortcut option does not seem to work. Even when I set it in Preferences, next time I open Fetch it remains inactive until I explicitly select a shortcut from the menu.

Do you have more than one shortcut with the same name?

When you quit and run Fetch again is the default shortcut setting in Preferences the same as is was originally?

    Thanks,

Actually, what happens is that I don't seem to be able to change the settings in the Preferences. Although I will set a default shortcut, if I move somewhere else in the Preferences menu and come back, the default shortcut setting will still be empty. I checked the Fetch preferences file in Library but it is read/write for everyone, so I should be able to make changes to it.

I would suggest quitting Fetch, removing the Fetch Prefs file from the Preferences folder (in the Library folder), and then trying again. If that doesn't help you can move the Fetch Prefs file back to restore your preferences.

Sorry, it won't work. In fact, the General and Download parts of Preferences will not allow me to make any changes, but the rest of them (Misc, etc.) will accept changes! Strange.

I apologize for missing your postings; thanks for following up.

I've never heard of a problem like this. When you say that the "General and Download parts of Preferences will not allow me to make any changes" do you mean that the controls don't do anything when you click on them, or that the changes you make don't "stick"? Are you running Fetch 4.0.2?

    Thanks,

I mean the latter, that they won't stick. I can make the changes to General and Download, but then if I close the Preferences or simply move to other parts of it and then come back to General or Preferences, my changes will have dissapeared. Yet, the rest of the Preferences options can be changed.

Another thing to try is unchecking the "Use Internet Config" box in the General section of Preferences, and pressing OK. Do settings stick after that?

    Thanks,

No, they don't. Unchecking Internet Config. makes no difference.

This is very weird. Are all of the settings in General and Download affected? For example, can you change the "Display server messages" checkbox and have it stick?

    Thanks,

Hmm... you are right. The rest of the options do stick. OK, what does not stick is the "Default Shortcut" from General (goes always back to None after I press OK) and the "Edit Text Files with" from Download (reverts always to Other...).

I would recommend choosing "New Connection..." from the File menu and choosing your current default shortcut from the Shortcuts pop-up menu. Then choose "Create New Default Shortcut..." from that same pop-up, and give this new shortcut a new name. If you then choose Preferences from the Customize menu does the Default Shortcut show "None"?

As for the default text editor, what do you set it to?

    Thanks,

OK, what happens now is that the default shortcut will stick. But, nothing happens when I start Fetch. I.e., it does not automatically connect to the default shortcut. It just "stays there" (or opens a new connection dialogue if I set the relevant flag).

Regarding the default editor, I use Word.

When Fetch puts up the New Connection window at startup is it filled in with your default shortcut? That's how it should work -- Fetch does not automatically connect to the default shortcut.

I can't figure out why the default text editor does not stick. Does it stick if you change it to something else? Do downloaded text files have the right icon?

    Thanks,

OK, the default connection is now working as intended (i.e. if I check the box for open connection at startup it will show me the default connection).

Regarding the problem of the text editor: no, it will not stick with other (but Word) options, and when I get a Word file from my server it will appear on my desktop with a white icon (i.e. it does not recognize that it is a Word file).

Note that I have to get the file manually from the menu, because I cannot click on the window (due to the other more serious problem that I have reported).

I'm glad that the default shortcut is working now.

Could you upload one of the blank-icon text files in MacBinary format to ftp.fetchsoftworks.com's incoming directory (leave the User ID and Password fields blank when you connect, and ignore the "Permission Denied" message you see when you enter the incoming directory). I'd like to see what type/creator codes Fetch is assigning.

    Thanks,
