  Is there a thread that will explain how to do this via applescript?

  Drag a file/folder to a "hot folder" that will then upload to a specific directory, and then send e-mail confirmation to an address (that it asks me for in the script, since it will be different every time)?

  If you download http://fetchsoftworks.com/FetchExampleScripts.sitx you will find a script named Upload Folder Action. If you attach that script to a folder in the finder, files dropped in the folder will be automatically uploaded to a specified URL.

  That script does not currently ask for an email address or send a confirmation. You could add that to the script, and I'd be happy to help if you're new to AppleScript.
