Edits not showing up on website (11 posts)

    I'm trying to edit html on Leopard with Fetch. Simple edits that are showing up on the file, but not on my website. I seem to be downloading and uploading correctly, and the changes are there each time I try. But still, they are not showing up on my website. Any advice? I've tried a different server but still no luck.

    Hi,

    When you go to view one of the edited pages on the web, have you tried reloading the page in your browser? Your web browser may be showing out-of-date information, and reloading it will force the browser to get the latest version from the web.

    In Safari, visit one of your updated webpages, go to the View menu, and choose Reload Page. If that doesn't do the trick, try going to the Safari menu, and choosing Empty Cache, and then viewing the pages and see if you see the updates.

    Thanks, Scott. I just tried that and the changes still aren't showing up. I'm sure it's something I've done wrong, but I can't figure out what yet.

    Hi,

    What program are you using to edit your webpages?

    Another thing to check is to make sure you're uploading the edited webpages to the same folder the existing webpages in. Often folks (and I've done it myself) accidentally upload the revisions to a different folder than the actual webpages are in, so that the revisions don't replace the existing webpages. You might want to double-check on that.

    I'm running Leopard and editing the pages in TextEdit. I just doublechecked and the html folder has the files in the correct place. And my changes are in those files. Just not on the website yet.

    Hi,

    I have a theory about what the problem might be, but I'd like some more information to confirm it (or help me form another theory).

    Could you please do the following?

    * Quit Fetch, if it's running.
    * Open Fetch again.
    * Connect to your server.
    * Change to the folder you're uploading to, if necessary.
    * From Fetch's View menu, choose Refresh File List.
    * Then choose Fetch Transcript from the Window menu, copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the transcript. Sorry to say this, but it looks like you are uploading to the wrong folder...

    If you go to your webiste's main address - williefrancis.com - and then click on one of the buttons that appears after the introduction (say, go to "about the author", you'll notice in the browser's address bar that it say it's displaying webpages from the /inside/html folder.

    However, it looks like you are uploading to the /html folder, which is different.

    So I believe what you need to do after you connect to your server with Fetch is open the "inside" folder, and then the "html" folder inside the "inside" folder, and upload your updates there.
