The rules for URLs say that some characters (including ~) should be encoded in hexadecimal to avoid problems; %7e is the hexadecimal code for tilde.
It would help to know more about the command you are sending. Could you post what's in the Fetch Transcript window after you get this error?

Actually you have to open the Transcript window by choosing "Fetch Transcript" from the Windows menu.

You should be able to see your web site with this URL:
http://www.datasync.com/~tval/
Currently I only see one file, Tootsietoy4. If that's an image file make sure it has the right file name suffix (e.g. .jpg for a JPEG image). The URL for that file is:

When I tell Fetch to send an ftp command. I get an error message: "Server file error: Unknown user name after~". However, when I copy the url from Fetch to any of my software, this is what is shown in lieu of the ~: %7.
Example: ftp://datasync.com/~tval/
I get back: ftp://datasync.com/%7etval/ Thanks for your help. Tom Valentino
