Errors when trying to backup my remote web server... (4 posts)

    Hi! I'm trying to backup our remote web server via Fetch using the "Mirror" function and am constantly encountering files that refuse to download and stop the entire backup process from proceeding.

    Here are a couple example errors...

    "Fetch could not get ".htaccess" because the FTP sever encountered an error accessing a file or folder."

    "Fetch could not get "FeedImport.suo" because the FTP sever encountered an error accessing a file or folder."

    Every other file within the folders where these two files reside download fine. It's just certain files like these that it chokes on for whatever reason.

    My questions are these...

    1) Is there a setting or something that allows Fetch to "not care" what the file is, just download it? These files are indeed there, and have no special permissions, Fetch is just not downloading the files.

    2) Is there a setting that tells Fetch to continue downloading the rest of the files if an error is encountered so it doesn't simple STOP the entire process due to one or two files?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Darren,

    (1) It is not Fetch that is "caring" about the files, it is the server. Fetch is asking the server to send it those files, and the server is saying it can't or won't send those files. There is something about those files that is causing the server to hiccup on them; there is no setting in Fetch that can make it download files the server won't let it download. You should investigate on the server end why the server is refusing to let Fetch download the files.

    (2) Sorry, no, there is no setting that lets Fetch continue downloading the rest of the files if an error occurs.

    So your best bet is to try to figure out why those files are causing a problem.

    If you want to try downloading one of the problem files manually (instead of with Mirror), and then send us the full Fetch Transcript from your attempt to do so, we will take a look and see if there are any clues as to why the server is having problems with those files. Here's what to do to provide us with the best information:

    * Quit Fetch.
    * Open Fetch again.
    * Connect to your server.
    * Go to one of the folders containing the problem files.
    * Go to the View menu, and choose Refresh.
    * Try downloading one of the problem files.
    * After you receive the error, go to the Window menu, and choose Fetch Transcript.
    * Copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

    Thanks,

    Thanks Scott! I hesitate to post all of the info in the log since this is a public forum, but let me know if this is enough info. If not, what info do you need specifically...

    TYPE I
    200 Type set to I.
    SIZE FeedImport.suo
    550 FeedImport.suo: The system cannot find the file specified.
    MDTM FeedImport.suo
    550 FeedImport.suo: The system cannot find the file specified.
    PORT 192,168,1,65,202,60
    200 PORT command successful.
    RETR FeedImport.suo
    550 FeedImport.suo: The system cannot find the file specified.
    Unsuccessful transfer of FeedImport.suo (0/0 bytes, 0 bytes/sec, 0:00 elapsed) stopped at 4/7/09 11:02:33 AM (error: 2,-30004)
    ftp_retrieve: 2,-30004 (state == RGET_RETRIEVING)

    Thanks again Scott!

    Hi Darren,

    We need to see the file list of the folder containing the files (which is why I asked you to do a View > Refresh before downloading, that will force Fetch to get a file list and put it in the transcript).

    I understand your concern about this being a public forum; you can send the transcript to us by private email instead, if you'd like. Please send it to:

    bb at fetchsoftworks dot com

    and then I can follow up with you by email.

    Thanks,
