    Hi,

    I am using Fetch 5.3 for the first time on my new Macbook running OS X Leopard. I am trying to update my website using ftp and have successfully "completed transfer". However, when I refresh the webpage it doesn't show the update. I've deleted the cache and refreshed the page holding down the alt key, but still no luck. The rtfd page in text edit shows the updated version but I can't make it appear on the normal web url. Any ideas?? Feel free to email. Thanks Andy M

    Hi,

    If I understand correctly: you have an existing website, you updated it on your Macintosh, Fetch appears to have uploaded the updates correctly, but you cannot see your updates in a web browser, is that correct?

    If you could tell us the following information, we may be able to help you figure out where the problem is:

    Which program are you using to edit your webpages?

    Could you tell us the address (URL) of your website?

    And could you please do the following?

    * Quit Fetch, if it's running.
    * Open Fetch again.
    * Connect to your server.
    * Try uploading again.
    * Then choose Fetch Transcript from the Window menu, copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

    Thanks,

    Hi Andy,

    I think I see the problem.

    The front page of your website is named "index.html", and that is the page the webserver is set up to display when someone visits www.merseyworld.com/andymelia (they are in fact seeing www.merseyworld.com/andymelia/index.html ).

    However, your updated file is named "index.rtfd" - so when you uploaded it, it did not replace the old "index.html" file, so your webserver continues to show the old "index.html" file.

    What you need to do is to create an updated page, in HTML format, named index.html, and upload that, so that it replaces the existing index.html file.

    Unfortunately, you can't simply rename "index.rtfd" to "index.html", because that will just result in a different problem.

    The problem is that TextEdit is a very poor HTML editor. While it will let you open HTML files, edit them, and save them again, when you do so it often either converts the file to something other than HTML, or at the very least, loses your formatting and links. (You may have gotten a warning when you saved your file.) TextEdit was also probably responsible for saving the revised file with the name "index.rtfd" instead of "index.html".

    So, my recommendations are: find a different program to edit your HTML, that will actually save the file with the correct name and without losing your formatting and links, edit the date in index.html again, and then upload that file using Fetch.

    As an alternative to TextEdit, we usually recommend TextWrangler, a free text editor from Bare Bones software. The downside is that you have to edit the HTML code directly (although for just changing a date, you don't need to fiddle with the HTML code - you can just edit that bit of text). There are other free text editors out there as well.

    I hope this helps, and please let me know if you have questions about the above.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Scott - help!

    Hi Andy,

    I see images and working links when I go to your website now, but I see that its date has gotten older, so I assume you pulled it out of backups someplace.

    I happen to have saved a copy of your front page's HTML from earlier this morning (the one dated Nov 2, 2007) - let me know if you would like me to send that to you; that would put you back to where you were yesterday/this morning.

    Could you tell me exactly what you did that caused the links and images to disappear?

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Thanks Scott, yes please send me a copy of the home page dated Nov 7th. I don't know what happened, but all the images disappeared when I tried to change from the rtfd to the html. So I reverted to an old source of html which I had saved but don't wish to use. I downloaded text wrangler but am not sure how to use it. (You've probably gathered I'm a bit of a technical idiot). On my old Mac I had no problem using Fetch 3 but the new OS X leopard will not support it.

    Thanks ANDY

    Hi Andy,

    I sent the copy of your webpage to the email address on your website.

    I'll follow up on the other issue - what caused the problem in the first place - a little later on.

    Thanks,
