Fetch and IPv6 FTP connections. Cannot traverse directories. (14 posts)

We recently changed one of our web servers to IPv6. Although I can establish a connection to a directory via FTP with Fetch, I cannot access folders within the directory. Fetch throws the following error:

Fetch could not open the folder "X" because the FTP server says that the requested item cannot be accessed.
Server responded: "X: A file or directory in the path name does not exist."

Thing is, I'm looking at the directory and it certainly exists. This used to work prior to the IPv6 change. Is Fetch v.5.7.3 (Mac) not compatible with IPv6? Thanks!

I have not specifically tested Fetch with servers on IPv6, but if there was a problem I'd expect it to crop up when Fetch gets a file list or transfers a file. The fact that you're getting a different sort of error suggests that IPv6 is not the issue.

I would refresh the file list (choose Refresh from the View menu) and try again. If that does not work, choose "Fetch Transcript" from the Window menu and post the contents. That may offer more clues to the problem.

    Thanks,

Having the same exact problem as Dan. Had to look for another option outside of Fetch. Used Dreamweaver and could connect but couldn't see the contents within our new IPv6 server until after I selected "Use IPv6 Transfer Mode" in the preference. I would rather us my Fetch application. Jim or whomever, can you specifically test Fetch with servers on IPv6 and share if there is a way we can view folder and content with the current version of Fetch or if a new version will be needed?

    Thanks!

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for that additional information. Could you try to connect with Fetch and then choose "Fetch Transcript" from the Window menu, and post the contents here? That would help me understand what's going on.

    Thanks,

    Jim Matthews

    Hi,

Thanks for that. Do you know if Dreamweaver provides a transcript, so I could see how it's managing to connect?

    Thanks,

Thanks, Dan, for posting that transcript. I don't think the problem you are seeing has anything to do with IPv6. The server says that there is a folder named "images":

    drwxrwsr-x 4 testsite webowner 4096 Mar 04 2009 images

But when Fetch tries to enter that folder the server says that the folder does not exist:

    CWD images
550 images: A file or directory in the path name does not exist.

By contrast, when Dreamweaver tries to enter the same directory, referring to it by its full path, that works:

    > CWD /web/data/www.xxxxxxx/testsite/production/images
    < 250 CWD command successful.

I would recommend choosing Go to Folder… from the Go menu in Fetch, and entering the full path (/web/data/www.xxxxxxx/testsite/production/images); does that work?

    Thanks,

    Jim Matthews

    Jim,

I would love for there to be a quick solution to this issue, but I can't help regarding transcripts. The serve in question is the server of an important client of our agency. My employer does not feel comfortable with our agency sharing our clients personnel information. Can Fetch the company provide you access to a IPv6 server for the purpose of testing their product issues. It seems like that would be a quicker path to a solution. Please advise.

    Thanks

As I wrote earlier, I don't think this issue has anything to do with IPv6. IPv6 changes the way FTP clients set up data connections for transferring file lists and files, but that part is working fine for you. You're only seeing a problem with the CWD (CHange Working Directory) command, and that command is the same on IPv4 as IPv6.

You can send transcripts using our feedback form (http://fetchsoftworks.com/fetch/feedback) so that they won't be public, and you can redact sensitive information (as you did above).

    Thanks,

    Jim Matthews

Jim, traversing directories on this server worked fine via FTP using Fetch before we switched to IPv6 so that change has to be related to this issue somehow. Also, when using DW, if the 'Use IPv6 Transfer Mode' option is not enabled, the same issue occurs with DW's FTP interface (can't access sub-directories). I don't know enough about the internal workings of DW to know just what exactly IPv6 Transfer Mode is but it seems that Fetch could use the same option ; )

Anyway, thanks for looking into this. Best, Dan
